Jowett begins his book with an overview of the different religious groups in the region, including Jews, Muslims, Ismailis, Ansaris, Druze, Yazidis and many Christian sects. He includes referent to earlier explorers, including Carsten Niebuhr and John Lewis Burckhardt. Jowett traveled from Alexandra to Beirut in May 1823. The final part of the book are given over to fellow-missionary and abolitionist Joseph Greave's journal account of his visit to Tunis, then under Ottoman rule.

(Preface). Jowett gives an account of the religious denominations in Syria and the Holy Land, and provides an extensive journal of this visit, including a chapter with notes on the journal. One chapter examines the "Natural, Civil and Religious State of Syria and the Holy Land, followed by "Notices, Remarks, and Suggestions." The appendix with the journal of Joseph Greaves describing his visit to Tunis. The map included as frontispiece is of Syria and the Holy Land; second folding map of Jerusalem.
