Presumed first edition (no direct statement provided but with matching dates upon title and copyright pages) INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. xviii, 362 pages. Hardcover: H 23.5cm x L 15.75cm. Lacks dust jacket. Black cloth rubbed, spine's gilt stamping a bit dulled but still legible, front board's gilt stamping remains fairly bright. Some soiling and toning to edges; strong foxing to endpapers with lighter foxing to several initial and rear leaves; occasional toning/foxing to interior leaves mostly occurring to pages opposite the book's b/w plates. Binding is firm. A very good copy. With the author's four-line ink inscription on the front free endpaper: "For | Peyton Williams, Jr. | With affection and best wishes | Edwin Mims." The inscribee was Mississippi State University English professor Peyton W. Williams, Jr. who was an authority on the work of William Faulkner and served as editor of MISSISSIPPI QUARTERLY: THE JOURNAL OF SOUTHERN CULTURE from 1970 to his death in 1987. With a Ph.D. earned at the University of Leipzig in 1885, James Hampton Kirkland was appointed Professor of Latin at Vanderbilt University in 1886 and became the second chancellor of Vanderbilt University serving from 1893 to 1937.
