This lavishly illustrated work includes 34 studies of Beaton's enthusiasms and inspirations, such as Hollywood film stars, royalty, and his travels from Russia to Haiti, all in the form of pictures and his witty essays. Published in September 1937, it appeared at the height of his interwar fame and met a fanfare of publicity in London and New York. Quarto. With 10 colour illustrations, half-tone photographic reproductions, black-and-white illustrations in the text. Title page printed red and black, contents printed in blue and black on white and pink paper. Original japon, spine lettered in gilt, blossom-patterned endpapers in pink, white, red, green, and gilt, top edge gilt. Spine toned, superficial split to head of rear joint, front board bowed, foxing to outer leaves, a couple of short closed tears to fore-edge of final leaves: a very good copy.

Batsford Ltd 1937 11 1/2" x 9 1/4" Cecil Beaton's second book with the scarce dust jacket. 'On the shelves at Ashcombe, I have now over fifty diaries & scrapbooks, memorials of many violated magazines, repositories of museum picture postcards, theatrical programmes, letters, photographs & pictorial miscellanea which have accumulated since childhood. Christian Bérard suggested to me that a similar scrapbook might be distilled from my own work during the last five years; & that is what has been done.' (from the preface). Beaton's photographs and drawings are collected together here and accompanied by witty essays on subjects such as Christmas, Winter House Party, Mrs Simpson: 20th November 1936, Marlene Dietrich, Garbo, Hats, New York, Dubrovnik, The Russian Ballet and Coronation.
