First edition, presentation copy from the author to fellow Commando Ted Tinkler, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "Ted, With best wishes and happy memories! Donald". Gilchrist's book "recalls vividly the personal aspects of life in a fighting force that gave a name with a special meaning to British military history" (The Scots Magazine). Donald Gilchrist (1914-2001) was serving as a captain in the Cameronians when he volunteered for the Commandos. "After acceptance he went to the commando depot at Achnacarry in February-March 1942 and successfully completed his training after which he was retained there as an instructor after joining No 4 Commando, he took part in both the Dieppe and Normandy landings serving as a captain, and later adjutant. He was second in command of the unit in Germany when he was released from full service and joined the Territorials" (Commando Veterans website). Captain Ted Tinkler, who died in 2011 aged 90, served with 1st Battalion Worcestershire Regiment before joining No 6 Commando.- The Scots Magazine, Vol. 74, 1960. Octavo.
