Rústica Editorial Ilustrada. Condition: Buen Estado. Dust Jacket Condition: Sin sobrecubiertas. Size: 19x14cm.

Hardcover. Condition: Used. Penguin, 1948. Used. Cakes and Ale is a delicious satire of London literary society between the Wars. Social climber Alroy Kear is flattered when he is selected by Edward Driffield's wife to pen the official biography of her lionized novelist husband, and determined to write a bestseller. But then Kear discovers the great novelist's voluptuous muse (and unlikely first wife), Rosie. The lively, loving heroine once gave Driffield enough material to last a lifetime, but now her memory casts an embarrissing shadow over his career and respectable image. Wise, witty, deeply satisfying, Cakes and Ale is Maugham at his best.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. "Cakes and Ale" by William Somerset Maugham. William Heinemann, London. 1930 first UK edition first printing. Signed presentation inscription from the author to C. W. Dawes (collector of erotica, bibliographer and writer) to endpaper, scattered spotting, original cloth, light fading to spine, spine ends and corners a little rubbed and bumped, dust-jacket priced at 7/6, light browning to spine, minor chipping to spine ends and corners, very short closed tear to foot of upper panel, some light spotting and slight surface soiling but an excellent example overall. Cakes and Ale, or, The Skeleton in the Cupboard (1930) is a novel by the British author W. Somerset Maugham. Maugham exposes the misguided social snobbery levelled at the character Rosie Driffield, whose frankness, honesty, and sexual freedom make her a target of conservative propriety. Her character is treated favourably by the book's narrator, Ashenden, who understands that she was a muse to the many artists who surrounded her, and who himself enjoyed her sexual favours. In his introduction to a Modern Library edition, published in 1950, Maugham wrote, "I am willing enough to agree with common opinion that Of Human Bondage is my best work . But the book I like best is Cakes and Ale . because in its pages lives for me again the woman with the lovely smile who was the model for Rosie Driffield. Signed by Author.
