Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Original publisher's dark brown cloth binding with gilt lettering and small gilt decoration of a train on front cover. No lettering on spine. 4 1/2" x 6 1/2." Fifty-seven pages, complete. Small black-and-white in-text illustrations and five black-and-white folding plates laid in back pocket. Index in front. Small sticker tipped in on front pastedown: "From The Railway Age Publishing Co., Chicago." Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, fading to endpapers, and loosening of gutters and inner hinges (which are still holding). Covers are very clean and intact except for slight fading, light rubbing, and slight wear to extremities. Plates are clean and intact but are fragile and have age toning and a few small splits. A Very Good copy. A charming and compact reference book intended for use by locomotive engineers, firemen, and others working in the field of locomotive engineering. The five plates laid in back pocket each show locomotives or locomotive parts or machinery. Author S. A. Alexander writes in his Preface, "This book is written for the special information of Engineers and Firemen who have to do work on their Engines while away from repair shops. It is only what its title implies--that is a Ready Reference directing what should be done in emergencies." Index is generally organized by the names of subjects relating to specific parts, mechanical problems, and emergencies. For example, some of the subjects addressed in this guide book are "Directions for Accidents, Personal Injuries," "Axles Broken," "Description of Westinghouse Brakes," "Centre--How to Find It," "Cut-Wheel Flanges," "Cylinder Packing," "Engine Off Track," "Equalizer Broken," "Hints to Firemen," "Knocks and Thumps--How to Find," "Main Rod or Strap Broken," "Piston Broken," "Pumps and Injectors--Will not work," "Saddle Pin Broken," "Starting a Train," "Valve-Slide--How to Set," "Water Foaming in Boiler," "Wedges--How to Adjust," and "Whistle Blown Out.".
