Item Description: London: Chatto & Windus, 1932, 1932. Octavo. Original yellow cloth, titles to spine gilt on blue ground, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in a custom quarter yellow morocco and marbled paper covered solander box. Spine a little darkened, internally bright; an excellent copy. First edition, signed limited issue. Number 17 of 314 specially bound copies, signed by the author. From the library of Oliver Brett, 3rd Viscount Esher (1881–1963), with his armorial bookplate to the front pastedown. Oliver Brett financed the literary journal Life and Letters between 1928 and 1934, to which Huxley was a contributor, along with many of the Bloomsbury authors. Brett's sister, Dorothy Eugénie Brett (1883–1977) was also the basis of the deaf, continually sketching character Jenny in Huxley's first book, Crome Yellow (1921). Dorothy Brett, who was partially deaf, associated with the Bloomsbury Group during her studies at the Slade School of Art and was a frequent member Lady Ottoline Morrell's gatherings at Garsington Manor, which were also satirised by Huxley in the novel. Item Description: Chatto & Windus, London, 1932. Signed limited first edition. Octavo, original yellow cloth, gilt topstain as issued. One of a limited edition of 324 numbered copies signed by the author on the limitation leaf, this is copy number 115. In fine condition with the lightest of shelfwear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A superior example. "After the success of his first three novels, Huxley abandoned the fictional milieu of literary London and directed his satire toward an imagined future. He admitted that the original idea of Brave New World was to challenge H.G. Wells’ Utopian vision The novel also marks Huxley’s increasing disenchantment with the world, which was to result in his leaving England for California in 1937 in search of a more spiritual life. The book was immediately successful" (Parker & Kermode). Bookseller Inventory # 5076

Item Description: London: Chatto and Windus., 1932. FIRST EDITION. Publisher's cloth in original dust-wrapper. Housed in a bespoke clamshell case. A few minor nicks to the top edge of the wrapper, a touch browned at crown and foot. Entirely unrestored. A most attractive copy. Scarce in this condition. A modern highlight, and a landmark of 20th century fiction suggesting that a future of boundless materialist happiness, designer narcosis and no strings attached sex might not be all its cracked up to be. I still say we should give it a fair crack of the whip though. Eschelbac & Shober 10. Bookseller Inventory # 48815

Item Description: London Chatto & Windus 1932, 1932. 1st edition, 1st printing. 306pp. Octavo. Bound in publisher's dark blue cloth with gold gilt lettering and decorations stamped to the spine. The top edge of text block stained blue. Slight bumping to corners. Some minor spots of foxing to the bottom edge. Illustrated dust jacket is price clipped and has some minor rubbing to the back panel, with minor professional restoration tidying up some closed tears. The jacket is in very good condition otherwise. Internally clean and an overall tight and bright copy. This is the first trade edition of Huxley's seminal piece of dystopic literature in the scarcely seen dust jacket. This novel takes place in an imagined dystopic state where the population is limited; natural reproduction and, as a result, the family, have been abolished; children are educated through hypnopaedic processes. Citizens have been conditioned to accept their stations in life through a process of breeding in castes, sensational entertainment, drugs, encouraged recreational sex and an abundance of material goods. There are areas of the world where "savage reservations" exist without such luxuries and family units and romantic relationships still exist. The majority of the story revolves around one such savage, John, as he is introduced to the New World and ultimately rejects the morally empty society. A beautiful copy of one of the greatest works of dystopic fiction and a deeply influential work that has been alluded to in numerous songs, movies, television shows and other books.
