"Blood Meridian" was Cormac McCarthy's fifth novel, a dark and bloody western which, though well recieved by some critics, was an immense commercial failure, with fewer than 1,500 selling of a 5,000 book run. However, after the success of McCarthy's "The Border Triolgy", many revisited his older works, "Blood Meridian" in particular gaining immense popularity. Today, "Blood Meridian" is hailed as McCarthy's magnum opus with many considering it one of the greatest American novels ever written. "Blood Meridian" has seen several attempts at a film adaptation since 1995, it's most recent attempt happening in 2023 headed by John Hilcoat, who had previously adapted McCarthy's novel "The Road" 1391938. Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Publisher's red cloth-backed red boards with titles in gilt to spine, map of the Old West to title page and verso of half-title page; original maroon dust jacket designed by Richard Adelson, "The Phantom Cart" painting by Salvador Dali to front panel with titles in red, and photo of McCarthy taken by Mark Morrow to rear panel. Near fine book, with some wear to head of spine, red remainder mark to top edge of text-block, a hint of soiling to cloth on front board; good unclipped dust jacket, with some scratches to front panel, light soiling to panels and spine, and light edgewear. Overall, a sturdy copy. Blood Meridian, set in the mid-19th century West, tells the story of a 14-year-old boy called "the kid" who joins The Glanton gang, a ruthless group commissioned by the Mexican governor to collect Apache scalps. None embody the disturbing ethos of the gang better than its second-in-command, Judge Holden, who's described as a "massive, hairless, albino man" and is the story's primary antagonist. While writing the novel, McCarthy moved to Texas and taught himself Spanish to immerse himself in Western culture. The sections on the Glanton gang are derived from My Confessions: The Recollections of a Rogue by Samuel Chamberlain, a first-hand account of Chamberlain's experiences riding with the group that includes references to the real-life Judge Holden. The book is widely considered to be Cormac McCarthy's greatest work, and one of the greatest novels of the 20th century. Renowned literary critic Harold Bloom called the novel the "ultimate Western," and "worthy of Herman Melville's Moby Dick.".

Hardcover. Condition: Near fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near fine. First Edition. The first edition of McCarthy's magnum opus, a book that sold poorly when it was first published but that increasingly is seen as one of the great American novels. According to the McCarthyist blog, the print run of this book was 5,000 copies; only 1,883 copies, including this one, sold. First edition (first and only printing). A very near fine, tight copy in a like dust jacket. The book shows light shelfwear, but is overall a superior copy; it is possible that a remainder mark was skillfully sanded off the top edge as there is some denting to the page block, but I can't say for sure. From the Tom Garner collection.

Trade paperback. Condition: Near fine. Uncorrected Proof. A scarce advance copy of the first British edition. One of likely fewer than 300 copies from a 3,000-copy first printing (per The McCarthyist). This novel is McCarthy's magnum opus. Uncorrected proof on "proofing paper." A very scarce issue, preceding the first UK edition. This copy has some soiling to the bottom edge of the page block but is otherwise near fine in red wrappers, as issued. Forgeries of this proof are known; this can be identified as an authentic proof because the page block is perfectbound and the rule (line) at the bottom of the publisher's logo on the cover is 1-1/8 inches from the bottom edge of the book (on all known forgeries, the logo is closer to the bottom edge). From the Tom Garner collection and purchased many years ago; the seller penciled in a price of £250 / $350.
