Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Undated, but on wartime economy paper and 1944 from other bibliographic sources. Some edge wear and chipping to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed and bruised, some overall time and dust staining, and yellowing and offsetting to endpapers and page fore edges, not price clipped (8/6), internally clean tight and square, overall a vg copy. 184pp. A dramatic and poignant WWII novel. Gibbs introduces the reader to the lonely girlfriends, wives and mothers of Armed Forces personnel, who carry on the work at the home front with uncommon valour, despite heartbreak and loss. Sir Philip Armand Hamilton Gibbs KBE (1877-1962), was an English journalist and prolific author of books who served as one of five official British reporters during the First World War. In 1937 Sir Philip Gibbs was a novelist famous enough to be included in Wills's set of modern British authors cigarette cards. Today he seems to be completely forgotten, though there are historians who still speak highly of his work as a war correspondent. Quite a scarce book.
