This is the first edition, first printing published in 2001 by Thorsons, an imprint of HarperCollins. The copyright page states: First Published as The Power of Compassion. "The Art of Living: A Guide to Contentment, Joy and Fulfillment by the Dalai Lama brings together profound, accessible teachings by His Holiness on living a joyful life with extraordinary images that offer insight into the rich cultural heritage of Tibetan Buddhism. His Holiness suggests how we can live peacefully with each other and the planet. He provides ways to deal with anger and negative emotions and techniques to cultivate open-heartedness and compassion. Photographer Ian Cumming's images of landscapes and tibetan people, both the monastic community and lay practitioners, take the reader on a photographic journey into the heart of Buddhist practice. The photographs, which accompany rather than illustrate the text, help us to deepen our appreciation of the context in which Tibetan Buddhism developed and to see how it is now practiced by those in Tibet as well as those in exile." -- from the inner front jacket flap. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Tenzin Gyatso, His Holiness the fourteenth Dalai Lama, is the exiled leader of Tibet. Born in North Eastern Tibet in 1935, the Dalai Lama was recognized at the age of two as the reincaarnation of the thirteenth Dalai Lama. He was brought to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, and enthroned in 1940. Ten years later, he assumed full responsibility as Head of State and Government. After the suppression of the Tibetan national uprising in 1959, His Holiness escaped to India where he was given political asylum. He is now widely recognized as an advocate of world peace and has received many honors, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989. He is the author of two memoirs and many books on Buddhism." -- from the inner rear jacket flap.
