Item Description: Hart Publishing Company, New York City, 1960. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: fair. First Edition. First Edition. Hardcover. 8.75" x 5.75". 392pp. With a foreword by Erich Fromm. Heavily chipped and edgeworn dust jacket over two-toned cloth binding. Corners bumped, boards gently rubbed and soiled. Pencil writing to front endpaper, bookseller sticker to front pastedown. Text clean and free of marks. The Summerhill School (still operating today) is an independent British boarding school that was founded in 1921 by Alexander Sutherland Neill with the belief that the school should be made to fit the child, rather than the other way around. It is run as a democratic community; the running of the school is conducted in the school meetings, which anyone, staff or pupil, may attend, and at which everyone has an equal vote. These meetings serve as both a legislative and judicial body. Members of the community are free to do as they please, so long as their actions do not cause any harm to others, according to Neill's principle "Freedom, not Licence." This extends to the freedom for pupils to choose which lessons, if any, they attend. This book made a major splash in the sixties as ideas about alternative education gained traction, spawning a number of copycat projects in the United States. Bookseller Inventory # 516

Item Description: Hart Publishing Company, New York, 1960. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First edition. Foreword by Erich Fromm. Lacks the promotional pamphlet. Slight sunning at the base of the spine, else fine, bound in two color cloth, in a slightly worn, very good plus first issue dustwrapper with tiny nicks and tears (we have also seen copies of the first edition in slightly later jackets). Publisher Harold Hart approached Neill to write about his controversial school, and together compiled this book from Neill's other works, which became the number one non-fiction bestseller in the U.S. The effect of the book helped to promulgate Neill's educational theories, as well as reviving the flagging attendance at the long-running experimental school that he had founded in 1921 in Germany in conjunction with the Neue Schule, and then moved to England in 1923. Uncommon. Bookseller Inventory # 99278
