Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st American Edition. 9" x 10.25" Soft cover. 14 pp., 120 numbered B&W photographs. Covers are age toned and curled, creasing to corners, sticker to head of rear cover. In San Francisco on 18 February 1972 Tony Ray-Jones was told that he had an acute and rare form of leukaemia. He died in London at the Royal Marsden Hospital less than a month later. He was thirty years old. The pictures that he took, and what he had to say about photography: these are of singular importance. As eccentric as their subjects, surreal, hilarious, yet kindly and bittersweet, Tony Ray-Jones' photographs show the gentle madness that overtakes people when they feel they can relax and be their true selves. Born in England, he studied design at Yale and freelanced in the US. When he returned to England he looked afresh at English life and the result is A Day Off, the only collection of his work in book form. Pictured here with a sharp but compassionate eye, are people seriously, doggedly intent on leisure activities: at the seashore, at carnivals, at horse and dog shows, at folk festivals, dances, beauty contests, and at Ascot and Eton--all relaxing at a furious clip.

On returning to England in 1966, he sought to photograph the 'English Way of life', particularly how people spent their leisure time. In Creative Camera in October 1968, he made an important statement about his attitude to his photographs of the English: 'My aim is to communicate something of the spirit and the mentality of the English, their habits and their way of life, the ironies that exist in the way they do things, partly through tradition and daily anachronisms in an honest and descriptive manner, the visual aspect being directed by the content. For me there is something very special and rather humorous about the "English way of life" and I wish to record it from my particular point of view before it becomes more Americanized. We are at an important stage in our history, having in a sense just been reduced to an island or defrocked and, as De Gaulle remarked, left naked. Nudity is perhaps more revealing of personality than a heavily clothed figure.' The Open Book pp302-3; [French edition] 802 photo books from the Auer collection p583.

Add to basketFirst edition. 264x234mm. pp. 14, 120 black and white photographs. Introduction by Ainslie Ellis. Original tan cloth, spine lettered in gilt with publisher's device to upper cover. Light rubbing to head and foot of spine. Original black and white photo illustrated dust-jacket, text printed in black. Slight toning to spine but otherwise a near fine dust jacket. Internally excellent and overall a very good copy of a seminal work of social commentary. A Day Off was published posthumously in 1972. It is a part-finished study dealing with that favourite subject of the English - social class. Tony Ray-Jones uses images of the English at play - from beauty contests in Margate to the opera at Glyndebourne - to show how we divide along class lines. "I want my pictures to bite like the images in Buñuel's films which disturb you while making you think. I want them to have poignancy and sharpness but with humour on top.My aim is to communicate something of the spirit and the mentality of the English, their habits and their way of life, the ironies that exist in the way they do things, partly through tradition and partly through the nature of their environment and mentality".
