Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Cover Photograph by Beverley Le Barrow (illustrator). Third printing, 1979, of the 1977 Panther paperback edition (The hardcover first was Jonathan Cape 1956.) Probably unread but with a 2-1/2-inch (6.5 cm) diagonal crease to bottom corner of front wrap, reducing our grade here to "very-good-minus." Pages moderately age-toned. No, "Photoshop" not having been invented by the Knoll Brothers until 1987 and introduced by Adobe in 1988, that's not how this rather odd 1977 cover design was created. Instead, it appears David Collins and furniture designer Floris van den Broecke (their names are barely discernible on the slide) actually built for Triad/Panther a giant model of a gold 9 mm. pistol, which was then straddled by our unnamed model in transparent silver body stocking ("Hair by Schumi," though) to be photographed by one Beverley Le Barrow, who may or may not have ever existed. Bookstorey-dot-com-dot-uk (or existentialennui-dot-com) reported back circa 2010: "Of all the book designs ever created for the James Bond series, arguably, none have captured its glamour, sex, danger and camp tongue-in-cheek humour better than the 15 paperbacks produced for Triad Granada by the photographer Beverley Le Barrow (released between 1977 and 1979 and coinciding with the Roger Moore era of films). Each photograph in the series is similarly themed: having a huge replica of an automatic 9mm golden pistol with a beautiful model wearing high fashion proactively" (provocatively? -- ed.) "draped across it. . . . Although, with his literal photographic interpretation, Le Barrow was a firm favourite among publishers, . . . his or her identity remains something of an enigma. It has been speculated by the blog Existential Ennui that, perhaps, Le Barrow was Beverly Goodway, who worked for The Sun newspaper as a Page 3 glamour model photographer. . . . This theory is further lent credence by a similarity in photographic styles and the fact that, earlier in his career, Beverly had worked as a fashion photographer. Whatever the truth, the secret identity only adds to the photographs' playful sense of mischief." Actually, to us, this curiously familiar-looking long-legged lass merely appears a tad uncomfortable. But, hey, so long as it's all for "art" . . . 192 pp. Reduced from $15.
