Rather, its focus was to concentrate on the mechanistic similarities between promotion and progression. Are the areas involved within the boundaries a continuum Are these two simultaneous processes Or are some of the affected cells in the stage of promotion when at the same time others have undergone irreversi ble changes tha. t position them in the stage of progression Or are these two stages the same thing, but called by different names To explore such concepts we assembled investigators with various back grounds and asked them to specifically address these and other questions about 'The Boundaries', within the context of the session to which they con tributed. The conference lasted two and a half days, from Wednesday to Friday. There were at least four speakers per session with morning and after noon sessions each day, except on Friday when the meeting ended at noon. The first day, each speaker had 25 minutes to present a position, followed by five minutes of discussion. At the end of the session there were 40 or 50 minutes of exchange on all the issues examined. For the remaining days, there were 25 minutes of presentation and 15 minutes of discussion. 388 pp. Englisch.

It is particularly frequent in ohildren where convul sions may lead to brain damage and subsequent seizure activity in adulthood. Temporal lobe epilepsy (synonyms include limbic epilepsy. psychomotor epilepsy and complex partial epilepsy) is the most devastating form of epilepsy in the adult population since: a) it is often extremely resistant to currently available anticonvulsant drugs (i.e -- it is more resistant than tonico-clonic or grand mal seizures) and b) it includes loss of consciousness. thereby limiting performance of many normal functions and leaving the individual susceptible to bodily injury. It is also associated with nerve cell loss. in particular in the hippocampus and other structures of the temporal lobes. In order to promote an appropriate therapy it is essential to understand the etiology of seizures and its relationship to brain damage. Basic research on epilepsy also provides a very useful vehicle to learn about the way the brain functions under normal conditions. For instance. much of our present understanding of the mechanisms of action of GABA and benzo diazepines. control of neuronal activity. etc. has been derived from such stUdies. 752 pp. Englisch.

Sahagian Chief, Electromagnetic Materials Technology Branch Deputy for Electronic Technology Hanscom AFB, MA 01731 I t should not be surprising that an event as significant as the discovery of the laser has had some con comitant impact on other areas of science and technology, but the extent of the impact was grossly unpredicted. Upon perusal of this bibliography, devoted to the subject of laser window and mirror materials, it becomes very apparent that the effect of the laser on materials R&D has been enormous. Several hundred papers and reports, representing millions of dollars of effort, have been promulgated over the past decade; and as new frequencies, improved tunability, higher power, and other charac teristics are achieved, we can expect even greater demands and requirements on the materials com munity. What are some of the highlights disclosec by this bibliography with regard to work already ac complished First, one can note the extensive investigations into developing new materials while at the same time improving old ones. Among the latter, alkali halides, for example, have essentially had a rebirth. I n the past five years more progress has been achieved in the chemical and structural perfec tion of this class of materials than in the entire preceding century. Also carried along in the surge for improved laser materials have been the alkaline earth fluorides (prime candidates for 3-to 5-J,Lm ap plications), chalcogenides, semiconductors, oxides, and others. 304 pp. Englisch.

First as dyestuffs, meaicinals and tannins and, much later, because of their potential use in examining the systematic and evolutionary relationships of plants, and their impli cation in defence against both herbivores and phytopatho gens. It is not surprising, therefore, that the first formally organised Society of Phytochemists, the Plant Phenolics group which was established in England in 1958, should have devoted themselves to an intensive study of these compounds. They were quickly followed by a like group in North America. But, by the mid-1960's, it was obvious to the members of both societies that their net was spread wider than just phenolic compounds and in 1965 both adopted a more appropriate name, The Phytochemical Society (now Phytochemical Society of Europe (PSE), and The Phytochemical Society of North America (PSNA) respec tively). In spite of this broadening of interest, both socie ties have continued to devote a major portion of their deliberations to phenolic compounds and it is entirely appropriate, therefore, that their first joint Symposium, held in the late summer of 1977 at the Rijksuniversiteit te Gent, Belgium, should be concerned with 'The Biochem istry of Plant Phenolics. ' First occasions are often difficult, but the chief organiser of this Symposium, Professsor Ch~is van Sumere, Head of the Laboratorium voor Plantenbiochemie of the Rijksuniversiteit te Gent with his charming wife and enthu siastic staff overcame all obstacles. 664 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The importance of real space imaging and spatially-resolved spectroscopy in many of the most significant problems of surface and interface behaviour is almost self evident. To join the expertise of the tradi tional surface scientist with that of the electron microscopist has however been a slow and difficult process. In the past few years remarkable progress has been achieved, including the development of new techniques of scanning transmission and reflection imaging as well as low energy microscopy, all carried out in greatly improved vacuum conditions. Most astonishing of all has been the advent of the scanning tunneling electron microscope providing atomic resolution in a manner readily compatible with most surface science diagnostic procedures. The problem of beam damage, though often serious, is increasingly well understood so that we can assess the reliability and usefulness of the results which can now be obtained in catalysis studies and a wide range of surface science applications. These new developments and many others in more established surface techniques are all described in this book, based on lectures given at a NATO Advanced Study Institute held in Erice, Sicily, at Easter 1987. It is regretted that a few lectures on low energy electron diffraction and channeling effects could not be included. Fifteen lecturers from seven different Countries and 67 students from 23 Countries and a wide variety of backgrounds attended the school. 332 pp. Englisch.

The meeting was sponsored by the Urological Group of the EORTC (European Organisation for Research in the Treatment of Cancer), the WHO Collaborating Centre for Bladder Cancer, the European Urological Association, the Italian Research Council (CNR) , Italian League against Tumours, Italian Government and Regional Sicilian Government. Contributions were accepted on the understanding that the editors could make certain changes leading towards a uniformity of style but accepting as a priority the importance of early publication, if necessary at the expense of stylistic perfection. Editorial notes have been inserted at infrequent intervals, sometimes to summarise discussions and at others in an attempt to clarify certain issues or to highlight conflicting opinions. Although the work has been divided amongst the editors and co editors it is only proper to acknowledge that the major role in collating and in correcting much of the material has fallen on Mrs MAske who has also typed the manuscript. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The physiological role of histamine in gastric secretion has been controversial since Popielski demonstrated that histamine sti mulates this secretion. The results using H2-receptor antagonists, together with the findings that histamine is produced and stored in the fundic mucosa and released upon vagal or hormonal stimulation, indicate that this amine is the major physiological stimulant of the parietal cells. The concepts of histamine as a 'final common chemo stimulator' of parietal cells, and as part of a 'multi-messenger' potentiating interaction of various hormonal secretagogues on parietal cells, have both been proposed to explain the involvement of hista mine in gastric secretory mechanisms. Histamine may also be an im portant factor in the pathogenesis of gastric hypersecretion and peptic ulcer disease since its mobilization from gastric mucosal stores is accelerated in peptic ulcer disease, and since treatment with vagotomy or H2-receptor antagonists decreases histamine release and increases its degradation in the gastric mucosa. How would he be received now How would he have been treated sixty years ago Yet, more than sixty years ago, Irving Langmuir, through his study of heat transfer from a tungsten filament, uncovered most of the fundamental ideas which are used to-day by the scientific com munity in pure and applied heterogeneous catalysis. Through his work with what were for the first time 'clean' metal surfaces, Langmuir formulated during a period of a little over ten years un til the early thirties, the concepts of chemisorption, monolayer, adsorption sites, adsorption isotherm, sticking probability, cata lytic mechanisms by way of the interaction between chemisorbed spe cies, behavior of non-uniform surfaces and repulsion between adsor bed dipoles. It is fair to say that many of these ideas constituting the first revolution in surface chemistry have since been refined through thousands of investigations. Countless papers have been pu blished on the subject of the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, the Langmuir catalytic kinetics and the Langmuir site-exclusion adsorp tion kinetics. The refinements have been significant. ThE original concepts in their primitive or amended form are used everyday by catalytic chemists and chemical engineers allover the world in their treatment of experimental data, design of reactors or inven tion of new processes. 652 pp. Englisch.

The developments have been particularly impressive in two areas : the di-electronic recombination of electrons with ions and the collisional processes of mUltiply charged ions. For dielectronic recombination, a major event was the obtainment, in 1983, of the first experimental data. This provided, at last, a non speculative basis for the study of that intricate and subtle process and strongly stimulated the theoretical activities. Multiply charged ions, on the other hand, have become popular, thanks to the development of powerful ion sources. This circumstance, together with a pressing demand from thermonuclear research for ionisation and charge exchange cross sections, has triggered systematic experimental investigations and new theoretical studies, which have contributed to considerably enlarge, over the last five years, our understanding of the collisional processes of multiply charged ions. Dielectronic recombination and multiply charged ions were therefore central points in the programme of the A.S.I. in HAN/Lesse and are given a corresponding emphasis in the present book. 504 pp. Englisch.

A review of the four previous Symposia shows the increase in scope of the scientific exploration in this rapidly expanding field. The first meeting, held in 1958, was devoted to the discussion al most entirely of Tay-Sachs disease. The majority of the work emanated from local laboratories. The participants at the present Symposium came from many other domestic and foreign research in stitutions. The scope of the papers presented at these meetings and the interest shown in the Symposium demonstrates the signifi cance attached by the scientific community to the problems of these hereditary diseases. The reasons for this are apparent, when one considers the contributions during recent years to our basic know ledge by lipid and enzyme chemistry, genetics, and neuropathology. Partly because of the hereditary nature of these diseases any new discovery in this field has general meaning and permits cautious generalization well beyond its clinical significance. 628 pp. Englisch.

Many other areas in physics and chemistry have undergone similarly spectacular development: beam foil spectroscopy in atomic physics, studies in atomic collisions, materials implantation, defects creation, nuclear microanalysis, and so on. Now, this most recent activity by itself and in its evident connec tion with the others has brought a new impetus to both the funda mental and the applied aspects of materials science. A summer school on 'Material Characterization Using Ion Beams' has resulted from these developments and the realization that the use of ion beams is not restricted to accelerators but covers a wide energy range in the developing technology. The idea of the ion beam as a common denominator of many act1v1t1es dealing with surface and near-surface characterization was enthu siastically received by many scientists and a school on this subject received the positive endorsement of NATO. The Advanced Study Institute on Materials Science has assumed for us the status of an 'institution' leading to better contact among the many laboratories engaged in this field. The fourth Institute in this series was held in Aleria, Corsica, between August 22 and September 12, 1976. 536 pp. Englisch.

In addition to the review talks given by the Lecturers at the Institute it proved feasible for other topics to be splendidly reviewed. This has led to a much wider subject coverage than would otherwise have been possible. The discussion sessions which followed these review talks were extremely valuable and almost all the participants played an active role. Essentially all of the verbal contributions presented at this ASI were subsequently put into written format, which is why these proceedings are so extensive. ~hey do, however, provide an up-to-date summary of DNA synthesis in a wide variety of subjects with many of the remaining problems clearly expressed. The editing of these contributions has been essentially confined to alterations in style and presentation. We have taken some liberties in the re-organization of the papers into related sections. We express our thanks to those who helped organize the ASI and to the session conveners who attempted to confine and contain those who became too verbose. We are indebted to NATO, Scientific Affairs Division for the financial support that made this ASI possible. Finally, we express our gratitude to Miss Brenda Marriott. Four of these research areas were then selected for their special importance in understanding physical processes on the ocean floor. In some of these, a great wealth of data has accumulated over the past two or three decades, but controversy exists in the interpretation of the results. In others, new techniques have re cently been devised that could lead to the collection and synthesis of new information. There was yet a third area in which little study had been undertaken and the results available appeared of great potential importance. The latter subject constitutes the title of this volume. To assess the information available and to facilitate plans for further research in the fields of interest that had been identified, the U.S. Office of Naval Research sponsored four symposia. The first was held in November 1972 at the University of California Con ference Center, Lake Arrowhead. The title of the symposium was 'Natural Gases in Marine Sediments and Their Mode of Distribution'. Twenty lectures were presented over a three-day period. All but two participants at this symposium subsequently submitted papers, which are published in this volume. In addition, Dr. K.O. Emery, who did not attend the symposium, supplied a manuscript on a topic most re levant to the subject matter discussed. 336 pp. Englisch.

The application of magnetic resonance methods to the study of actual biological systems as contrasted to cell-free samples, although not entirely novel, as demonstrated by Civan and Shporer in Volume I, has taken on new dimensions with the use of phosphorus-31 and carbon-13 NMR in studying cells, tissues, and organelles. The applications of 31 P NMR to such systems is reviewed in this volume, while carbon-13 will be covered in a later one. The use of nitroxide spin labels has grown to the point where it now may be considered a common biological technique. The synthesis and applications of a new class of nitroxides is described in this volume. ESR spectroscopy of paramagnetic ions is a powerful approach to studying molecular and structural details, as the chapter by Boas, Pilbrow, and Smith on the ESR of copper in Volume 1 has shown. It was attended by 624 participants who gave 538 presentations, more than 10 times the numbers of the first meeting; these proceedings contain 354 papers that were submitted for publication. Barriers of specialized terminologies form, which cause scientists to lose contact with their colleagues, and differences in points-of-view emerge which hinder the unification of knowledge among the various disciplines, and even within a given discipline. As a result, the scientist, and especially the student, is in many instances offered fragmented glimpses of subjects that are funda mentally synthetic and that should be treated in their own right. Such seems to be the case of the liquid state. Unlike the other states of matter -- gases, solids, and plasmas -- the liquid state has not yet received unified treatment, probably because it has been the least explored and remains the least understood state of matter. Occasionally, events occur which help remove some of the barriers that separate scientists and disciplines alike. Such an event was the ASI on The Liquid State held this past July at the lovely Hotel Tivoli Sintra, in the picturesque town of Sintra, Portugal, approximately 30 km northwest of Lisbon. Since this broad a subject could not be covered in one Institute, the focus of the ASI was on a theme that provided a common thread of understanding for all in attendance -- the Electrical Proper ties of the Liquid State. 600 pp. Englisch.

Each annual volume will contain contributions in areas where significant progress has been made. Topics to be dealt with include immunologic and host defense systems, control mechanisms of cell and population growth, cell differentiation, and cell transformation. The regulatory mech~sms controlling the interactions between normal and tumor cells may be immunologic in nature or they may relate to diverse biological characteristics of tumor and normal cells and their response to micro environmental factors. While the central question of tumor immunol ogy addresses the nature and uniqueness of tumor-associated antigens in humans, the identification of the stages of differentiation and functions of the various cell types involved in immunity is advancing rapidly. The de velopment of monoclonal antibody methodologies together with progress in the biochemical characterization of cell markers, cell separation, and mea surement of cell functions has significantly aided in the identification and quantitation of different cell types. Establishing the role of these cells in the regulation of human immune mechanisms offers a means for evaluating the status of the immune responses in cancer patients and for assessing the effects tumor and antitumor treatments may exert on their functionality, which, in turn, may alter the effects of antitumor treatments. 328 pp. Englisch.

Because these mate rials exhibit non-linear and often synergistic properties, they have found increasing application in our technology. Their multifarious uses have, in turn, spurred new research efforts, to find yet different ways of joining two kinds of polymer molecules, with novel physical and/or mechanical behavior patterns. In August, 1973, the Polymer Division of the American Chemical Society sponsored a symposium at its meeting in Chi cago on Polymer Blends, Grafts, and Blocks. This book collects the papers presented at that symposium. Yet, it is more than just a collection of papers, for we here display the thinking and efforts of a number of top-ranking American and foreign scientists in one of the world's more active research areas. The symposium emphasized the interrelationships among synthetic detail, morphology, and physical and mechanical properties. Several novel syntheses were presented. These include oxidation resistant thermoplastic elastomers (Holden), a graft copolymer based thermoplastic elastomer (Kennedy and Smith), a cationic graft copolymer (Kennedy, Charles, and Davidson), an AB crosslinked copolymer (Bamford and Eastmond), an interpenetrating polymer network (Donatelli, Thomas, and Sperling), and simultaneous interpenetrating networks (Frisch, Klempner, Frisch, and Ghiradella). Most polymer blends, grafts, and blocks exhibit two phases. The theory of microdomain structure was discussed (Helfand). The different ways that the two molecules can be joined together was examined (Kenney), and their topology was explored (Sperling). 452 pp. Englisch.

A most revealing paraphrase by Asher\* of a verse by Bishop Thomas Ken more than adequately summarizes the plight of the immobilized patient, who often lies dormant and de pressed for years on end. In this volume, Dr. Steinberg has offered the reader a unique opportunity to share his many years of experience in caring for the immobilized patient. His careful attempt to explore the pathophysiologic effects of immobilization on a number of organ systems, combined with a host of practical aspects with regard to patient care, is unique and refreshing. This text should command the re spect of any physician faced with the vicissitudes and frus trations of caring for the immobilized. The final chapter de tailing 'The Psychological Aspects of Immobilization,' by Hammer and Kenan, offers the reader considerable insight into the essentials and value of occupational and physical therapy. It should prove most valuable to physicians as well 'Asher, R. A. ]. Dangers of going to bed. Br. Med. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The initial impetus for this text occurred when we were searching for a single book that could be recommended to the attendees at the Mossbauer Spectroscopy Institute at The Catholic University of America. This Institute is an introductory course on the theory and interpretation of Mossbauer spectroscopy for workers in industrial, academic, and government labora tories. None of the books available adequately covered the breadth and scope of the lectures in the Institute. A list of these books and review articles is included in Appendix C. To meet our needs, we undertook the creation of this text. The chapters are based upon the lectures given at the various Institutes from 1967 to 1969. Most of the lectures were recorded and transcripts sent to the lecturers, who then prepared the manuscripts, using the transcripts as a guide so as to retain the style developed during the lecture. Each chapter is written in the style of the authors. As the editor, my main task was to main tain uniformity of format and nomenclature. A list of nomenclature used in this volume is reproduced in Appendix A. We hope that this list will be used particularly by new investigators and teachers of Mossbauer spectroscopy so that future literature will employ a uniform system. 216 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume is based on the Proceedings of the International Conference on 'Microbial Infections: Role of Biological Response Modifiers' held in Tampa, FL, May 29-31, 1991. The major purpose of this conference was to bring together in one forum prominent investigators from around the world studying a variety of microbial pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and the effects of biological response modifiers (BRM) on the immune response to these microorganisms. BRM have been widely utilized in the area of antitumor resistance and include not only experimental tumor cell vaccines, but also biologically active substances such as cytokines, i. e. , interferons, tumor necrosis factor, and interleukins, as well as products from bacteria which influence host resistance mechanisms. It is the belief of the organizers of this Conference that it was very timely to discuss in detail BRMs as they impact on microbial infections per se. It is now widely accepted that immunocompromised individuals, including those exposed to immunosuppressive substances such as antimetabolites used for chemothera py of malignancies, or infectious agents, such as the human immunodeficiency virus and other viruses which depress the immune response and, in turn, affect a host so as to become highly susceptible to opportunistic microorganisms, benefit from BRM stimulation of their immune system. A wide variety of immunomodulators are now being studied in terms of treating infectious diseases, as well as malignancy and autoimmune diseases. 360 pp. Englisch.

INTRODUCTION In recent years, the need for a complete collection of information rele vant to diatomic moleeules has become evident. Several excellent collections of this type of information have been available for many years (Refs. 1-3); however, the state of our collective knowledge has been considerably expanded since their publication. 596 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The last quarter-century has been marked by the extremely rapid growth of the solid-state sciences. They include what is now the largest subfield of physics, and the materials engineering sciences have likewise flourished. And, playing an active role throughout this vast area of science and engineer ing have been very large numbers of chemists. Yet, even though the role of chemistry in the solid-state sciences has been a vital one and the solid-state sciences have, in turn, made enormous contributions to chemical thought, solid-state chemistry has not been recognized by the general body of chemists as a major subfield of chemistry. Solid-state chemistry is not even well defined as to content. Some, for example, would have it include only the quantum chemistry of solids and would reject thermodynamics and phase equilibria; this is nonsense. Solid-state chemistry has many facets, and one of the purposes of this Treatise is to help define the field. Perhaps the most general characteristic of solid-state chemistry, and one which helps differentiate it from solid-state physics, is its focus on the chemical composition and atomic configuration of real solids and on the relationship of composition and structure to the chemical and physical properties of the solid. Real solids are usually extremely complex and exhibit almost infinite variety in their compositional and structural features. 620 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The rapid expansion of research activity in all disciplines of science and technology and the concomitant growth in the number of scientific publications have caused a con siderable strain on library budgets. Even well-endowed libraries find it too expensive to collect all scientific journals. Research workers therefore often find it difficult to discover the extent and nature of work done on a particular molecule. Moreover, liter ature searches, even in a well-equipped li brary, take a great deal of time and effort. In recent years the need for a comprehensive bibliography of the spectroscopy of poly atomic organic molecules, particularly the derivatives of benzene, naphthalene, and diazine, has been keenly felt. This volume has therefore been prepared to provide easy access to information on infrared, Raman, absorption, emission, fluorescence, and phosphorescence spectroscopy, and also re lated calculations. It covers about 900 or ganic ring compounds. These compounds are arranged in alphabetic order; references are given in chronological sequence for each molecule, each characterized as to the tech nique and conditions covered. Thus, much library time may be saved and, in particular, even researchers who do not have convenient access to a really good library will be able to locate pertinent references in a matter of seconds. 7 Vibrational Analysis - C.R. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The progress in protein and nucleic acid chemistry together with improvements of the previously employed tissue culture techniques have led to the solution of problems such as that of the generation of antibody diversity or of the molecular structure of T and B cell membrane receptor for antigen which had challenged the past generations of immunologists. Thanks to this progress an impressive amount of knowledge has been accumulated on certain cell types that were relatively 'mysterious' until recently. The B lymphocyte represents a typical example of such a cell. With these considerations in mind, we have started to organize a NATO summer school on 'The molecular basis of B cell differentation and function' that had the specific aim of bringing up to date a selected number of young investigators. During the course, held in Santa Margheri ta Ligure, October 1-11, 1985 it became apparent that rather than a formal school we had organized an informal series of Workshops where both the Faculty members and the participants were discussing their own data in addition to reviewing the general progress in the field. The deep commi ttment of everyone to his research subj ect and the enthusiasm had caused this very successful change in the shape of the course. At the end we asked the members of the Faculty and the participants to write a summary of their data and of their point of view on selected subj ect s. 184 pp. Englisch.
