Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -During the last two decades, structural equation modeling (SEM) has emerged as a powerful multivariate data analysis tool in social science research settings, especially in the fields of sociology, psychology, and education. Although its roots can be traced back to the first half of this century, when Spearman (1904) developed factor analysis and Wright (1934) introduced path analysis, it was not until the 1970s that the works by Karl Joreskog and his associates (e. g. , Joreskog, 1977; Joreskog and Van Thillo, 1973) began to make general SEM techniques accessible to the social and behavioral science research communities. Today, with the development and increasing avail ability of SEM computer programs, SEM has become a well-established and respected data analysis method, incorporating many of the traditional analysis techniques as special cases. State-of-the-art SEM software packages such as LISREL (Joreskog and Sorbom, 1993a,b) and EQS (Bentler, 1993; Bentler and Wu, 1993) handle a variety of ordinary least squares regression designs as well as complex structural equation models involving variables with arbitrary distributions. Unfortunately, many students and researchers hesitate to use SEM methods, perhaps due to the somewhat complex underlying statistical repre sentation and theory. In my opinion, social science students and researchers can benefit greatly from acquiring knowledge and skills in SEM since the methods-applied appropriately-can provide a bridge between the theo retical and empirical aspects of behavioral research.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 268 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Stochastic processes are found in probabilistic systems that evolve with time. Discrete stochastic processes change by only integer time steps (for some time scale), or are characterized by discrete occurrences at arbitrary times. Discrete Stochastic Processes helps the reader develop the understanding and intuition necessary to apply stochastic process theory in engineering, science and operations research. The book approaches the subject via many simple examples which build insight into the structure of stochastic processes and the general effect of these phenomena in real systems. The book presents mathematical ideas without recourse to measure theory, using only minimal mathematical analysis. In the proofs and explanations, clarity is favored over formal rigor, and simplicity over generality. Numerous examples are given to show how results fail to hold when all the conditions are not satisfied.Audience: An excellent textbook for a graduate level course in engineering and operations research. Also an invaluable reference for all those requiring a deeper understanding of the subject.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 290 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -This book presents a selection of topics from probability theory. Essentially, the topics chosen are those that are likely to be the most useful to someone planning to pursue research in the modern theory of stochastic processes. The prospective reader is assumed to have good mathematical maturity. In particular, he should have prior exposure to basic probability theory at the level of, say, K.L. Chung's 'Elementary probability theory with stochastic processes' (Springer-Verlag, 1974) and real and functional analysis at the level of Royden's 'Real analysis' (Macmillan, 1968). The first chapter is a rapid overview of the basics. Each subsequent chapter deals with a separate topic in detail. There is clearly some selection involved and therefore many omissions, but that cannot be helped in a book of this size. The style is deliberately terse to enforce active learning. Thus several tidbits of deduction are left to the reader as labelled exercises in the main text of each chapter. In addition, there are supplementary exercises at the end. In the preface to his classic text on probability ('Probability', Addison Wesley, 1968), Leo Breiman speaks of the right and left hands of probability.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 156 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Probability Theory, Theory of Random Processes and Mathematical Statistics are important areas of modern mathematics and its applications. They develop rigorous models for a proper treatment for various 'random' phenomena which we encounter in the real world. They provide us with numerous tools for an analysis, prediction and, ultimately, control of random phenomena. Statistics itself helps with choice of a proper mathematical model (e.g., by estimation of unknown parameters) on the basis of statistical data collected by observations. This volume is intended to be a concise textbook for a graduate level course, with carefully selected topics representing the most important areas of modern Probability, Random Processes and Statistics. The first part (Ch. 1-3) can serve as a self-contained, elementary introduction to Probability, Random Processes and Statistics. It contains a number of relatively sim ple and typical examples of random phenomena which allow a natural introduction of general structures and methods. Only knowledge of elements of real/complex analysis, linear algebra and ordinary differential equations is required here. The second part (Ch. 4-6) provides a foundation of Stochastic Analysis, gives information on basic models of random processes and tools to study them. Here a familiarity with elements of functional analysis is necessary. Our intention to make this course fast-moving made it necessary to present important material in a form of examples.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 272 pp. Englisch.

Chapter 17 c10ses with narrative descriptions of three interesting IVHS projects: emergency tow-truck dispatching, optimum ambulance-routing, and the in-car traffie reports now being beamed into family cars cruising along Ameriea's major traffic arteries. Many helpful individuals contributed toward the successful completion of Under standing the Navstar. My lovely wife, Cyndy, was unquestionably the most beneficial contributor. Her affectionate comments and her broad-ranging support were greatly appreciated. So was her diligent and uncomplaining work in word-process ing the many drafts of the final manuseript. Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Our motivation for gathering the material for this book over aperiod of seven years has been to unify and simplify ideas wh ich appeared in a sizable number of re search articles during the past two decades. More specifically, it has been our aim to provide the categorical foundations for extensive work that was published on the epimorphism- and cowellpoweredness problem, predominantly for categories of topological spaces. In doing so we found the categorical not ion of closure operators interesting enough to be studied for its own sake, as it unifies and describes other significant mathematical notions and since it leads to a never-ending stream of ex amples and applications in all areas of mathematics. These are somewhat arbitrarily restricted to topology, algebra and (a small part of) discrete mathematics in this book, although other areas, such as functional analysis, would provide an equally rich and interesting supply of examples. We also had to restrict the themes in our theoretical exposition. In spite of the fact that closure operators generalize the uni versal closure operations of abelian category theory and of topos- and sheaf theory, we chose to mention these aspects only en passant, in favour of the presentation of new results more closely related to our original intentions. We also needed to refrain from studying topological concepts, such as compactness, in the setting of an arbitrary closure-equipped category, although this topic appears prominently in the published literature involving closure operators.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 380 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -A Course in the Theory of Groups is a comprehensive introduction to the theory of groups - finite and infinite, commutative and non-commutative. Presupposing only a basic knowledge of modern algebra, it introduces the reader to the different branches of group theory and to its principal accomplishments. While stressing the unity of group theory, the book also draws attention to connections with other areas of algebra such as ring theory and homological algebra. This new edition has been updated at various points, some proofs have been improved, and lastly about thirty additional exercises are included. There are three main additions to the book. In the chapter on group extensions an exposition of Schreier's concrete approach via factor sets is given before the introduction of covering groups. This seems to be desirable on pedagogical grounds. Then S. Thomas's elegant proof of the automorphism tower theorem is included in the section on complete groups. Finally an elementary counterexample to the Burnside problem due to N.D. Gupta has been added in the chapter on finiteness properties.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 524 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Like many novel ideas, the idea for this volume and its predecessor arose over lunch in the cafeteria of the old Wellcome Institute. On an atternoon in Sept- ber 1988, Dorothy and Roy Porter, and I, sketched out a plan for a set of conf- ences in which scholars from a variety of disciplines would explore the emergence of modern medical ethics in the English-speaking world: from its pre-history in the quarrels that arose as gentlemanly codes of etiquette and honor broke down under the pressure of the eighteenth-century 'sick trade,' to the Enlightenment ethics of John Gregory and Thomas Percival, to the American appropriation process that culminated in the American Medical Association's 1847 Code of Ethics, and to the British turn to medical jurisprudence in the 1858 Medical Act. Roy Porter formally presented our idea as a plan for two back-to-back c- ferences to the Wellcome Trust, and I presented it to the editors of the PHI- LOSOPHY AND MEDICINE series, H. Tristram Engeihardt, Jr. and Stuart Spicker. The reception from both parties was enthusiastic and so, with the financial backing of the former and a commitment to publication from the latter, Roy Porter, ably assisted by Frieda Hauser and Steven Emberton, - ganized two conferences. The first was held at the Wellcome Institute in - cember 1989; the second was sponsored by the Wellcome, but was actually held in the National Hospital, in December 1990.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 256 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - A clear and systematic treatment of time series of data, regular and chaotic, found in nonlinear systems. The text leads readers from measurements of one or more variables through the steps of building models of the source as a dynamical system, classifying the source by its dynamical characteristics, and finally predicting and controlling the dynamical system. It examines methods for separating the signal of physical interest from contamination by unwanted noise, and for investigating the phase space of the chaotic signal and its properties. The emphasis throughout is on the use of modern mathematical tools for investigating chaotic behaviour to uncover properties of physical systems, requiring knowledge of dynamical systems at the advanced undergraduate level and some knowledge of Fourier transforms and other signal processing methods.

We will show that the basic practices and procedures that define software engineering and the ISO guideline are, for all intents and purposes, one and the same. We hope that the readers of this book will use the information found within not only to pass the certification audit but as a tool to be used to create the well-managed engineering environment needed to create reliable, well engineered products in a consistent manner. Audience This book is intended for senior software engineers, software managers, and non software managers within software organizations whose aim is to create an engi neering environment within their company or organization. In addition, individ uals outside the software organization who have responsibility for the specification of the software product and preparing their organization to take ownership of the developed product will find this book of great interest. Finally, those who must choose software companies to do business with or audit software companies to determine their ability to engineer and maintain a software product will find this book helpful. 2 Introduction Overview This book is made up of twenty-four chapters that can be grouped into four sections. Chapter 1 through Chapter 4 set the basis for the following chapters that deal directly with the guideline.
Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Doing Worlds with Words throws light on the problem of meaning as the meeting point of linguistics, logic and philosophy, and critically assesses the possibilities and limitations of elucidating the nature of meaning by means of formal logic, model theory and model-theoretical semantics. The main thrust of the book is to show that it is misguided to understand model theory metaphysically and so to try to base formal semantics on something like formal metaphysics; rather, the book states that model theory and similar tools of the analysis of language should be understood as capturing the semantically relevant, especially inferential, structure of language. From this vantage point, the reader gains a new light on many of the traditional concepts and problems of logic and philosophy of language, such as meaning, reference, truth and the nature of formal logic.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Stochastic Processes: General Theory starts with the fundamental existence theorem of Kolmogorov, together with several of its extensions to stochastic processes. It treats the function theoretical aspects of processes and includes an extended account of martingales and their generalizations. Various compositions of (quasi- or semi-)martingales and their integrals are given. Here the Bochner boundedness principle plays a unifying role: a unique feature of the book. Applications to higher order stochastic differential equations and their special features are presented in detail. Stochastic processes in a manifold and multiparameter stochastic analysis are also discussed. Each of the seven chapters includes complements, exercises and extensive references: many avenues of research are suggested. The book is a completely revised and enlarged version of the author's Stochastic Processes and Integration (Noordhoff, 1979). The new title reflects the content and generality of the extensive amount of new material. Audience: Suitable as a text/reference for second year graduate classes and seminars. A knowledge of real analysis, including Lebesgue integration, is a prerequisite.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is one avenue for offering assistance to developing countries in their efforts to grow. Small countries typically have limited resources to direct toward investment attraction programs, so the ability to segment the market (of Multinational Corporations looking to invest) is a crucial skill. This book develops and employs an investment preference analysis model to give evidence that homogenous groups of investors can be identified. Once these groups are identified, their needs - specific preference requirements for laws, regulations, incentives, and general conditions - can be more efficiently addressed.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 226 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The term speech processing refers to the scientific discipline concerned with the analysis and processing of speech signals for getting the best benefit in various practical scenarios. These different practical scenarios correspond to a large variety of applications of speech processing research. Examples of some applications include enhancement, coding, synthesis, recognition and speaker recognition. A very rapid growth, particularly during the past ten years, has resulted due to the efforts of many leading scientists. The ideal aim is to develop algorithms for a certain task that maximize performance, are computationally feasible and are robust to a wide class of conditions. The purpose of this book is to provide a cohesive collection of articles that describe recent advances in various branches of speech processing. The main focus is in describing specific research directions through a detailed analysis and review of both the theoretical and practical settings. The intended audience includes graduate students who are embarking on speech research as well as the experienced researcher already working in the field. For graduate students taking a course, this book serves as a supplement to the course material. As the student focuses on a particular topic, the corresponding set of articles in this book will serve as an initiation through exposure to research issues and by providing an extensive reference list to commence a literature survey. Expe rienced researchers can utilize this book as a reference guide and can expand their horizons in this rather broad area.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 492 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Most of the progress in cardiac energetics in recent years has been spurred by the pressure-volume area concept, the natural extension into energetics of earlier pioneering work delineating the time-varying elastance framework for ventricular contraction. The book draws together a broad spectrum of researchers - basic, applied and clinical - having a shared interest in the energetics of cardiac muscle and ventricle, providing an overview of the current state of the art.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 260 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Industrial development is essential to improvement of the standard of living in all countries. In a given region, old and new plants, processes, and technologies have to coexist. Technological penetration and substitution processes are generally taking place; they are entirely dynamic and this trend is going to stay like this. People's health and the environment can be affected, directly or indirectly by routine waste discharges or by accidents. A series of recent major industrial accidents and the effect of pollution highlighted, once again, the need for better management of routine and accidental risks. Moreover, the existence of natural hazards complicate even more the situation in any given region. In the past effort to cope with these risks, if made at all, have been largely on a plant by plant basis; some plants are well equipped to manage environmental hazards while others are not. Managing the hazards of modern technological systems has become a key activity in highly industrialized countries. Decision makers are often confronted with complex issues concerning economic and social development, industrialization and associated infrastructure needs, population and land use planning. Such issues have to be addressed in such a way that ensures that public health will not be disrupted or substantially degraded.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 372 pp. Englisch.
