Translated into English by Robert Bragner. Sadberk Hanim Museum, whose collections of over seventeen thousand objects ranging from the Neolithic Age to the Ottoman period represent many Anatolian cultures, including Byzantine, Timurid, Seljuk and Ottoman, is celebrating its 25th anniversary. This occasion is marked by an exhibition of the 339 objects purchased from abroad over 25 years since Turkey's first private museum was established. This is the first time that these objects have been shown side by side, and the exhibition is an opportunity for the museum to share with visitors its delight and pride in its pioneering role.

Soft cover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Paperback. Pbo. Oblong 4to. (27 x 28 cm). In English and Turkish. 219 p., ills. The Ottoman Empire, which, for centuries, had successfully ruled nations and communities of diverse ethnic origins and religious denominations under the same administrative system, was entering an irrevocable process of disintegration at the turn of the 20th century. Struggling to take precautionary steps against the pressures of the "New Nation States" that originated from the Balkans, which were openly supported by Russia, England, Austria and Greece, Sultan Abdulhamid II announced -out of despair and the fait accomplihe faced- the proclamation of the Second Constitution on 24 July 1908 to protect his throne, for he justifiably believed this to be the only solution to prevent, or at least delay the complete disintegration of the Empire. Sultan Abdulhamid II, who by then was nearing the 32nd year of his reign, was convinced that this was the sole measure to be taken to keep under control the power "Young Turk" movement, which increasingly evolved into a stronger force under the auspices of the "Committee of Union and Progress", had over the large masses. It was, on the other hand, impossible for the restoration of the 1876 Constitution and the implementation of a Constitutional regime based on a newly established parliament by way of elections, to provide viable solutions to the grander problems of the Empire. The upheaval instigated by the Islamic faction waging war against the Committee of Union and Progress and the counter- revolution attempt, which has come to be known as the "31 March Incident", ended when the Third Army stationed in Salonica arrived in Istanbul and seized control of the govemment. The deposition of Sultan Abdulhamid II on 27 April 1909 and the subsequent enthronement of the 65-year-old Sultan Mehmed Resad V meant, evidently, that the government of the Empire was now in the hands of the leaders of the Committee of Union and Progress. In the ensuing years, the rigours of the Balkan War and World War I compelled the Committee members, who adopted "Liberty - Justice - Fraternity and Equality" ideals as their slogan, to relinquish their pluralistic and democratic stance and pursue a nationalistic discourse, which, in turn, accelerated the run towards the inevitable end. The purpose of the catalogue and the exhibition we designed in commemoration of "The 400th Anniversary of the Restoration ofthe Constitution" is to draw attention to a tumultuous period that had significant repercussions on the Republic years. It is rather intriguing how, from books and posters to memorabilia, and even quotidian objects, masses of diverse religions and races expressed their yearning for and expectations from a more democratic regime. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Sinan Kuneralp, Prof. Edhem Eldem, Dr. Sacit Kutlu, David Barchard, Paul Bessemer and Sukru Ilicak, who all contributed to the exhibition catalogue with their valuable articles; to Mehmet Akgul, Atom Damali, Oktar Kubat, Ugur Yegin, Ugur Goktasli, Orlando Kalumeno, Roni Margulies and Ekrem Gocay, who made it possible for the works in their private archives and collections to be published in the catalogue and displayed in the exhibition; to Sadberk Hamin Museum Director Hulya Bilgi and her team; and to project coordinator Bahattin Oztuncay, with whom we collaborated on the selection of items included in the exhibition and the catalogue.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Minor creasing to 1 corner and to top edge of rear wrap. Minor shelfwear. ; The "Images in Terracotta" exhibition being held on 18 November 2011-15 April 2012 consists of Greek and Roman period terracotta figurines in the Vehbi Koc Foundation Sadberk Hanim Museum. Production of figurines can be traced back to prehistoric times, when people began to depict sacred entities or figures they held in regard. These were made of diverse materials, depending on the period and region. In antiquity the preferred material was terracotta. The earliest examples were shaped by hand, but in later centuries moulding techniques were introduced and mass production began. The terracotta figurines dating from Greek and Roman periods that are the subject of this exhibition were principally used as votive offerings or grave gifts, as demonstrated both by ancient written sources and archaeological excavations. Figurines representing gods and goddesses predominate among those with sacred significance. In addition the exhibition includes figurines that reflect daily life in antiquity, such as mothers nursing their babies or sewing. ; 232 pages.

The Sevi Gonul Collection of ecclesiastical silver, which is now housed in the Sadberk Hanim Museum, Istanbul, comprises sixty-five objects manufactured in Istanbul over a two-hundred year period, from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century. The majority of the objects in the Collection is intended for liturgical use, but there is also a small, distinctive group decorated with with secular themes inspired from Antique mythology. Whether liturgical or secular, the iconographic composition of these objects emerges from a rich ornamental context of floral, vegetal and animal motifs drawn from contemporary artistic trends in western Europe. This particular assembly offers fascinating evidence for the diverse artistic and cultural milieu of Istanbul in the late Ottoman period.

Harmony of line and colour: Illuminated manuscripts documents and calligraphy in the Sadberk Hanim Museum Collection.= Yazida âhenk ve renk: Sadberk Hanim Müzesi Koleksiyonundan sanatli kitaplar, belgeler ve hüsn-i hatlar. [Exhibition catalogue]. April 25 - Aralik 22, 2019. Prep. by Priscilla Mary Isin. On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Vehbi Koç Foundation, Sadberk Hanim Museum, which is an affiliated cultural institution of the Foundation, wished to focus public attention on a selection of the museum's magnificent collection of illuminated manuscripts and calligraphy by organizing the exhibition "Harmony of Line and Colour". Curator of the exhibition is Prof. Dr. Zeren Tan?nd?, who has also prepared the catalogue. Sadberk Han?m Museum's collection of illuminated manuscripts and calligraphy was created as a result of the special interest in this subject felt by Sevgi Gönül, who herself had an outstanding collection of calligraphic panels. Sevgi Gönül served as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Museum until her death in 2003 and under her direction the collection was enriched with rare manuscript Korans, prayer books, albums, documents such as imperial edicts, warrants and endowment deeds, hilye-i serif panels and calligraphic wall panels by renowned Ottoman calligraphers. Sevgi Gönül also collected rare examples of Sufi panels. Over time both collections developed and diversified to a noteworthy degree. Sevgi Gönül's personal calligraphy collection was at her own wish transferred to Sadberk Hanim Museum in 2004, following her premature death. Sadberk Hanim Museum's collection of manuscripts and calligraphy totalled 915 works at the start of 2019. Apart from the 157 works belonging to the Sevgi Gönül collection, the museum collection comprises the Hüseyin Kocabas collection, the Pirizade collection, works purchased at auction in Turkey and abroad, and donations. The Hüseyin Kocabas collection of 601 works consists of Korans, copies of the Dela'ilü'l-Hayrat, miscellanies, calligraphers' diplomas and literary works. The Pirizade collection consists of 28 manuscripts, nine of which are Korans. Korans and prayer books that are richly illuminated on every page, albums, documents such as endowment deeds, property deeds, imperial edicts, are invaluable sources of information for Ottoman social and economic history, architecture and art. Examples preserved in Sadberk Han?m Museum are enlightening as regards Ottoman calligraphic style between the late fifteenth and early twentieth centuries, while the signatures on these works increase our knowledge of the master calligraphers, artists and illuminators who created them.

Dance of fire: Iznik tiles and ceramics in the Sadberk Hanim Museum and Ömer M. Koç Collections. Catalogue of 327 Iznik vessels and tiles from the Sadberk Hanim Museum and Ömer Koç Collections. "This exhibition, which is the first event on the museum's 2009 calendar, is designed to illustrate the chronological development if Iznik tiles and ceramics through the pieces in both collections. The Iznik ware in the exhibition comprises wall tiles and a wide range of vessels reflecting the socioeconomic status and tastes of their users produced at the Iznik potteries between the 15th and 17th centuries. Both tiles and vessels clearly illustrate the inexhaustible creativity of the artists, their richly vaired repertoire of decorative compositions, masterful use of colour, and constant search for technical innovation.".

Kütahya: Sadberk Hanim Museum Kütahya Tiles and Ceramics Collection. The KÜTAHYA: Sadberk Hanim Museum's Kütahya Tile and Ceramic Collection Exhibition will be held at Sadberk Han?m Museum and remain open from 8 March until 25 November 2018. The exhibition encompasses Kütahya ware in all its wide diversity of form and decoration, and is accompanied by a comprehensive book on the subject. Curators of the exhibition are Hülya Bilgi and Idil Zanbak Vermeersch, who have also prepared the catalogue. The Ottoman period tiles and ceramics collection is one of the most important of the Sadberk Han?m Museum collections. It consists of ware made in potteries in Iznik, Kütahya and Çanakkale, which were the three main centres of Ottoman tile and ceramic art between the 15th and early 20th centuries; enabling the development of production over this period to be clearly understood. Organised as one of the major events on Sadberk Han?m Museum's programme for 2018, the exhibition presents examples of tiles and ceramics produced in Kütahya, where pottery has been made without interruption since antiquity and which in Ottoman times became the second most important source of tiles after Iznik. Sadberk Han?m Museum's Kütahya tile and ceramic collection is here exhibited chronologically and according to stylistic features. The exhibition is a reflection of production in Kütahya between the 18th and 20th centuries, during the Ottoman period. The diversity of the exhibits means that they throw light on both the artistic and technical aspects of Kütahya tile and ceramic production; tracing changes over time in decoration, form, and quality of the paste and glaze. Ceramic finds uncovered in the course of public infrastructure works in the city of Kütahya in 1979 demonstrated that production in Kütahya continued in parallel with that of Iznik. This ancient art managed to survive in Kütahya for centuries, from early Ottoman times onwards. Kütahya's master potters and tile makers maintained a high level of creativity and while styles changed throughout the period they continued to meet the needs of ordinary people for domestic ware, while at the same time producing tiles to embellish the walls of monumental buildings. Kütahya tiles and ceramics had long since found their way into museums and private collections in the 19th century, and today are increasingly sought after by collectors.

The Hüseyin Kocabas collection of 601 works consists of Korans, copies of the Dela'ilü'l-Hayrat,miscellanies, calligraphers' diplomas and literary works. Examples preserved in Sadberk Hanim Museum are enlightening as regards Ottoman calligraphic style between the late fifteenth and early twentieth centuries, while the signatures on these works increase our knowledge of the master calligraphers, artists and illuminators who created them.

Portraits from the Ottoman Court. Ömer M. Koç Collection.= Hanedan ve kamera. Osmanli Sarayindan portreler. Ömer M. Koç Koleksiyonu. "Dynasty and the Camera: Portraits from the Ottoman Court" exhibition will be held on 8 January - 29 May 2011. The exhibition consists of a selection from the Ottoman portrait photographs from Ömer M. Koç collection shows the high level of technical and artistic terms of photography by the interest of the Ottoman imperial family. This exhibition marks the importance given by the Ottoman sultans, other members of the royal dynasty and statesmen in the 19th century and includes the photographs of Prince Ömer Faruk the son of Caliph Abdülmecid, Nazime Sultan the daughter of Sultan Abdülaziz, Fehime Sultan the daughter of Sultan Murad V, Prince Yusuf Izzeddin the son of Sultan Abdülaziz, Sultan Murad V, Prince Mehmed Selim the son of Sultan Abdülhamid II, Prince Mehmed Seyfeddin and Esma Sultan the children of Sultan Abdülaziz. During the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz, who acceded to the throne in 1861 and was keenly interested in various branches of fine arts, Ottoman portrait photography reached a pinnacle of achievment in both technical and artistic terms, thanks to the skill of the Abdullah Brothers, who specialised in portrait photography. Vasilaki Kargopulo, who was appointed as court photographer in 1878, two years after Sultan Abdülhamid II came to the throne, contiuned to take similarly high quality portraits of the royal family and statesmen. As ameteur photography gained momentum from the turn of the century onwards, members of the royal family began to take their own photographs, the number of family photographs taken in private areas of royal residences increased significantly. Some members of the Ottoman royal family were particularly interested in portrait photography, notably Caliph Abdülmecid Efendi, Heir Apparent Yusuf Izzeddin Efendi, and the royal princes Ömer Faruk, Mehmed Selaheddin and Osman Fuad, who had their portrait photographs on various occasions from their childhood onwards, and pioneered this interest among other members of the royal family as expressions of loyalty and friendship continued for many years.
