Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Jim Marshall's unseen 'peace' photographs, collated and published here for the first time are a timely document for our world today. Almost 60 years after Gerald Holtom created the peace symbol, this body of work is a fascinating, beautiful, and thoughtful reflection from one of the most celebrated photographers of the twentieth century. It is introduced with a foreword by Joan Baez and text by Peter Doggett. Renowned street artist and graphic designer Shepard Fairey provides the book's afterword. The CND symbol was designed in 1958 by Gerald Holtom for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. Holtom later said of his inspiration for the symbol: "I was in despair. Deep despair. I drew myself: the representative of an individual in despair, with hands palm outstretched outwards and downwards in the manner of Goya's peasant before the firing squad. I formalized the drawing into a line and put a circle round it." The symbol spread from the UK to the anti-war campaign in the US. Marshall's photographs were taken mainly between 1961 and 1968 across America and chart the progression of the CND symbol from a 'Ban the Bomb'-specific protest, to an internationally recognised symbol of peace. He captured street graffiti in the New York subway, buttons pinned to hippies and students, and West Coast peace rallies held by a generation who believed, for a brief moment, they could make a difference. AUTHOR: Jim Marshall (1936-2010) has been called the most celebrated and prolific photographer of the twentieth century. Born in Chicago, teaching himself photography by capturing musicians in the North Beach coffeehouses he loved and frequented. He moved to New York in the early 1960s, working on assignment for Look and Life magazines and shooting album covers for Atlantic, Columbia and ABC Paramount. By the mid-1960s, he had moved back to San Francisco, with a reputation as a formidably talented music photographer already well established. In a career that ended with his untimely death in 2010, Marshall shot more than 500 album covers and his photographs are in private and museum collections around the world. Posthumously, Marshall holds the distinction of being the only photographer to ever be honored by The Grammys with a Trustees Award for his life's work. SELLING POINTS: Timely document for world today. Photographs by one of most celebrated photographers of twentieth century. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. In the mid-nineties, documentarian Peter Spirer embarked on a three-year odyssey to offer a realistic view of Hip-Hop and the people and culture it encompassed, interviewing over 80 artists involved in the art form. Spirer managed to capture a seminal moment as the culture balanced on the cusp of the mainstream. As Ice-T comments in his foreword to the book, 'Rhyme & Reason is one of the few films that was there to document us before Hip-Hop truly exploded.' Spirer's goal was to make a film, 'for anyone who's at a traffic light and gets intimidated by another car pulling up with a fat sound-system. I wanted to give an understanding of where that was coming from and what it was all about.' While filming, Spirer took accompanying stills using a medium format Rolleiflex camera. It is these photographs that form THE BOOK OF RHYME & REASON. 'The Rollei allowed me to capture some amazing moments: Puffy getting a trim in his office while doing three tasks at once, Biggie opening record plaques on his couch, Ice-T and Mack 10 hanging with their homies, Heavy D at the barber, playing pool. There was the Jack The Rapper convention with Death Row making a statement, at a Disney World Hotel, that ended in chaos. There were magical moments such as Redman and Erick Sermon freestyling on the mic to amazed onlookers at a block party in Newark and watching Wu-Tang Clan chop it up on the block in Staten Island on a cold winter's day before they exploded.' This coffee table volume features over 130 of Spirer's photographs from 1994 to 1997. As Hip-Hop commemorates its fiftieth anniversary in 2023, it is particularly fitting that many of these images from this formative period are being seen and published for the first time. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. By the start of 1966, The Rolling Stones position as rock gods was established. They were making serious money and splashing out on new homes and cars. Their official photographer was invited to shoot an 'At Home' session with each of the band. This is the first time his 'At Home' sessions have been collated and published. The photographs are relaxed, the band's ease with Mankowitz evident. There are moments of contemplation, intimacy and wit, and Mankowitz manages to capture something of an amused innocence to the whole concept, as if the five of them can't quite believe how far they have come. Goin' Home With the Rolling Stones '66 is a beguiling collection of images, shot with incredible skill, that offers that rare gem in Stones photography. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Beautiful portrait of America in the 1960s, rediscovered after 50 years. In 1966, Mario Carnicelli won first place in an Italian national photography competition sponsored by Popular Photography magazine and Mamiya and Pentax. The prize was a scholarship to photograph America. Carnicelli was fascinated by the almost reckless freedom offered by America, with its mix of cultures and traditions, its fashion and individuality; while at the same time he was aware of a pervading loneliness and rootlessness in people separated from family and clan. This beautiful book features over 150 colour and black and white images of America in the 1960s. It transcends other books on a similar subject matter; the photographs are truly compelling, drawing the reader/ viewer into Carnicelli's world. He approached the country as an outsider, and yet his perspective managed to capture the essence of the American experience. His photographs are a captivating, optimistic and contemplative look at the complexity of ordinary people living the American dream. These photographs were recently rediscovered after 50 years, and the book's release coincides with an exhibition of this work at Morton Hill Gallery in London. AUTHOR: Mario Carnicelli (b.1937) was exposed to photography from a young age, through his family's photography business in Pistoia, Italy. He went on to document public events, demonstrations and political meetings. His style was influenced by the humanistic approach, photographers like Lewis Hine and the FSA-photographers. He worked for national newspapers and magazines and had several solo exhibitions of his work during the 1960s and 1970s, before retiring from photography in the 1970s to focus on running his own photography business. Many of his photographs, including his American Voyage essays, have lain forgotten until now. 150 colour and b/w photographs Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

"Danny's photos are a treasured artistic record of the people who initiated a movement from within their own neighborhood and this work links that exuberant time to the larger history of LGBT people. This book is a very welcome addition to our enduring collective memory." Gus Van Sant LGBT: San Francisco is the first book dedicated to photographer Daniel Nicoletta's archive of powerful images tracing the burgeoning lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender mecca that was San Francisco in the 1970s to its present. Nicoletta is perhaps most well known for his iconic images of Harvey Milk, one of the world's first openly gay elected officials who was assassinated by a homophobic colleague in 1978, but Nicoletta's 40-year ouvre is also a unique insider's perspective on the years that followed Milk's death taking us through the ebuliance and the pathos of the times. LGBT: San Francisco is a stunning photographic work that is not to be missed. As Chuck Mobley writes in his introduction, 'Its value lies in its inerrant service to the history of the LGBT movement in 20th century America; forming an invaluable chronicle of a specific time and place. And, most especially: the people who created it." AUTHOR: Daniel Nicoletta (born 1954) has been a leading chronicler of the LGBT civil rights movement for over forty years. By the start of 1966, the Rolling Stones' position as rock gods was established. They were making serious money and splashing out on new homes and cars. Their official photographer and friend, Gered Mankowitz, was invited to shoot an "at home" session with each member of the band. "They hated the idea of unknown photographers visiting their private sanctuaries . If I did it then the press office would have a large selection of this type of image and could fulfil any magazine request without having to bother the band." Mankowitz kept these photographs in supermarket carrier bags stashed under his desk for several years, "getting in my way and frequently wondering why I continued to hold on to them." This is the first time these sessions have been collated and published. The book includes both iconic and unseen photographs: Mick in a kipper tie turning on his new television and posing outside with a new Aston Martin; Keith, Lord of the Manor-style, with his blue Bentley and antique sword at his East Sussex home; Charlie grinning next to lingerie drying in the garden; Brian in obligatory silk shirt in front of a handpainted mural; Bill in the kitchen with his dog. Goin' Home with the Rolling Stones '66 is a beguiling collection of images, shot with incredible skill, that offers that rare thing in Stones photography--a fresh perspective. It features an introduction by Mankowitz and a foreword from the Rolling Stones' legendary manager, Andrew Loog Oldham.
