The Cold War divided it, breaking the human and commercial links that for a millennium made it a channel for contact between East and West. Now the Cold War is over, Northern Europe and the Baltic have come alive. The author developed his interest in the Baltic in the late 1980s when he became the British Ambassador in Copenhagen.
