Guter Zustand. - In "Am Anfang war das Wort" schreibt Batya Gur über ein Milieu, das sie kennt: Die israelische Autorin war viele Jahre selbst Dozentin für Literatur. In Am Anfang war das Wort geht es um dieses ungewöhnliche Universitätsmilieu, besser gesagt um den Fachbereich für Literatur. Gleich zu Beginn des Romans entführt Gur die Leser in einen temporeichen Strudel von Beziehungen und Charakteren, und es geschehen zwei Morde. An der Universität von Jerusalem sterben an einem Wochenende zwei Dozenten desselben Fachbereichs: Der Doktorand Ido Dudai stirbt bei einem Tauchunfall, der sich schon bald als Mord entpuppt und Professor Schaul Tirosch wird erschlagen in seinem Büro aufgefunden. So vertrackt und undurchschaubar die universitären Beziehungen um Ansehen, wissenschaftlichen Stolz, Begünstigung, autoritären Druck und elitäre Gespreiztheit sind, so kompliziert gestaltet sich auch die Aufklärung der Mordfälle. Inspektor Michael Ochajon von der Jerusalemer Polizei sieht sich einem unentwirrbaren Geflecht von Andeutungen, Indizien und Beziehungen gegenüber. Bald schon stößt Ochajon auf einige Geheimnisse im Leben Tiroschs: Hinter der Maske des peniblen Literaturpapsts mit einer hypnotischen Wirkung auf Frauen scheint einiges verborgen zu sein. Dudai, der sich kurz vor seinem Tod in den USA aufhielt, scheint diesem Geheimnis seines Professors auf die Spur gekommen zu sein. Schließlich glaubt Ochajon, dass die Lösung des Rätsels in Gedichtband Schira des hebräischen Dichters Argon versteckt liegt. Für einige Zeit verlegt er die Untersuchung in die Universitätsbibliothek. Als Ochajon das Doppelleben eines Professors aufdeckt, ist es bis zum Motiv für die beiden Morde, die irgendeinen Zusammenhang haben müssen, nicht mehr weit. In diesem Roman sorgen die komplizierten universitären Verhältnisse mit ihrer eigenen Ethik für eine Vielzahl von Andeutungen und ein immer komplexer werdendes Geflecht von menschlichen Beziehungen und mörderischen Indizien. Gur erzählt weniger aus kriminalistischem, sondern aus psychologischem Interesse. Die Personen sind vielschichtig und in all ihrer Widersprüchlichkeit beschrieben. Seine Faszination bezieht dieses Buch dabei aus der spannenden Enthüllung als Annährung an ein Rätsel. Mit Inspektor Ochajon schuf Gur den kriminalistischen Anti-Held schlechthin: Seine privaten Probleme sind etwa so kompliziert wie der Fall, an dem er gerade arbeitet und Ochajon verfügt über den intuitiven Spürsinn eines Gefühlsmenschen. Ein Inspektor also, der gerade das Gegenteil von den beinharten Spürhunden dieses Krimi-Genres ist. Januar 1947 in Tel Aviv, Israel; 19. Mai 2005 in Jerusalem, Israel) war eine israelische Schriftstellerin, Journalistin und Literaturwissenschaftlerin. Leben: Batya Gur hatte Eltern polnischer Herkunft. Diese waren nach Israel ausgewandert, nachdem ein Teil der Familie in den nationalsozialistischen Vernichtungslagern ermordet worden war. Nach einem Studium der Literaturwissenschaften in Jerusalem war Gur lange Zeit selbst als Dozentin für Literatur tätig.[1] 1988 legte sie ihre erste eigene literarische Arbeit vor, einen Kriminalroman um den gebildeten und zugleich melancholischen Inspektor Michael Ochajon von der Jerusalemer Polizei, und hatte damit gleich einen internationalen Bestsellererfolg. Sie war damit die erste israelische Autorin überhaupt, die mit Kriminalromanen bekannt wurde. Im Jahr 1993 erhielt sie für dieses ins Deutsche übersetzte Erstlingswerk Denn am Sabbat sollst du ruhen" den Deutschen Krimi Preis. Die Folgebände um Inspektor Michael Ochajon, aber auch die anderen Romane von Gur, die nicht dem Krimi-Genre zuzuordnen sind, setzten sich allesamt nicht zuletzt mit ihrem Heimatland kritisch.
