Hardcover. Condition: Fine. London. Bello/Pan Macmillan. 2014. Originally published by Batsford in 1941. Hard Cover. Orange covers with circular titles in black and orange to the upper board. Demy 8to (8¾" by 5⅝") (221 mm x 142 mm). 130 pp. Reprint. Book is fine. In this biographical memoir, written during the Second World War and subtitled 'A Non-Grammarian's Chapbook', Olivier takes the five grammatical moods - infinitive, imperative, indicative, subjunctive and conditional - and uses them to describe village and country life in her beloved Wiltshire as it was in 1941, the year of first publication. Covering a range of topics - from the folklore and traditions of the local area, to the weather and landscape itself - Country Moods and Tenses captures a moment and describes a world which has, in many ways, been lost to us. A contemporary of Cecil Beaton, Siegfried Sassoon and Rex Whistler, Edith Olivier is best known for her first book, the novella, The Love Child but was the author of a variety of both fiction and non-fiction, as well as becoming the mayor of Wilton, Wiltshire, in 1939. Archibald Joseph Cronin (19 July 1896 6 January 1981), known as A. J. Cronin, was a Scottish physician and novelist. His best-known novel is The Citadel (1937), about a Scottish doctor who serves in a Welsh mining village before achieving success in London, where he becomes disillusioned about the venality and incompetence of some doctors. Cronin knew both areas, as a medical inspector of mines and as a doctor in Harley Street. The book exposed unfairness and malpractice in British medicine and helped to inspire the National Health Service. RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions.
