The invasion of Okinawa, three hundred twenty five miles from the Japanese mainland, was the climax of the campaign against the Japanese that had begun three years earlier. Together with the British Pacific Fleet, the American Task Force 58 launched the invasion on April 1, and the siege lasted for eighty one days. Allied casualties were close to fifty thousand men, with twenty two ships sunk, more than two hundred fifty damaged and over five hundred aircraft lost. The Japanese, having adopted a no surrender policy, suffered horrible losses, as well.
