Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. From Introduction: " These ten stories of infidelity are set in bedrooms, town, cities, the world over. They range from a Perverse Writers' Conference in Boston to strange places such as Gary, Indiana's 'Land's End' which seethes with fantasy like a witch's cauldron. There's Krakow in the late 1960s, in a satirical story of nationalist ferment and sexual freedom, and nineteenth century colonial Hobart, where a true tale gives an unexpected twist to jilted romance. And there's Frankfurt, Florence, London, Buenos Aires. Infidelity need not be of the sexual kind. It has many faces. Some of the stories echo the distant past in which feudal loyalty to a master or a creed embraced the dialectic of the oath and its renunciation. These stories extend the idea of infidelity into the political and cultural arena." Authors include the editor of the book, Marsha Rowe, Scott Bradfield, Jane DeLynn, Alison Fell, David Widgery, Penelope Fitzgerald, Nina Fitzpatrick, Gary Indiana, Penelope Lively, and Colm Toibin.

Hardcover. First Edition [1998], so stated. First printing indicated by a complete number sequence. Near Fine in Near Fine DJ: Both book and DJ show only minute indications of use. The Book shows just a hint of shelving wear along the bottom edge of the boards; the pages have tanned slightly, due to aging; the binding leans ever so slightly off square, but remains perfectly secure; the text is clean. The DJ shows barely discernible rubbing; two superficial indentations near the top of the rear panel; else flawless the price is unclipped. No longer absolutely pristine, but remains very close to 'As New' and could probably pass for such. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (9.5 x 6.5 x 1.7 inches). xi, 500 pages. NOT an Ex-Library copy. 8vo. 304pp. (published in 1991 by Chatto and Windus). Hardback with DJ. Mary Gaitskill's Two Girls, Fat and Thin is a brilliantly satiric but nonetheless disturbingly realistic story of how cults appeal to the alienated and confused precisely by providing them with a sense of belonging and simple answers to complex questions. And, given the mixed messages they receive daily about gender, sexuality, identity, empowerment and the body (see any issue of YM, for example, or, for that matter, Cosmopolitan), it's hard to imagine anyone with greater potential for alienation and confusion that the adolescent American female. In Gaitskill's hilariously parodic roman a clef, the two girls of the title, "fat" Dorothy and "thin" Justine, are taken in by the "Definitivist" philosophy of one Anna Granite, in a transparently veiled, hysterically accurate send up of Ayn Rand's "Objectivism." Anyone who's suffered through Rand's didactic, overwrought novels will be delighted by such details, such parodies within the parody, as Granite's fictional fictions, The Bulwark and The Gods Disdained. And given the essential similarities between Granite and Rand, Definitivism and Objectivism, Gaitskill's novel makes it difficult to see how anybody takes the latter seriously.
