Book Description: T And W Boone, London, 1841. Leather binding. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. This book has the first colour plates of Wandjina rock art paintings from the north-western Kimberley region. The work includes scientific appendices on birds by John Gould; mammals, reptiles, amphibians by John Edward Gray; and insects by Adam White and includes two maps by Arrowsmith. Book Description: T. And W. Boone, London, 1841. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Important association copy. Each volume has the bookplate of Sir John Lubbock, First Baron Avebury (1834-1913) inside the cover. The shadow of the bookplate on its opposite page, the Ffep indicates its integrity and originality. Both volumes are signed "John Lubbock High Elms 18 Dec 1869" on the title page. High Elms was Lubbocks' family estate. Charles Darwin was his next door neighbor and Lubbock's closest friend. John Lubbock together with Pitt Rivers (whose daughter he married) sponsored and supported Charles Darwin's Beagle Voyage and was spokesman for Darwin in parliament. He came from a banking family and developed scientific interests linking archaeological materials with modern "primitive peoples" like the Australian Aboriginals. He believed that these modern primitives corresponded with the ancient peoples what the developing science of archaeology was exposing. John Lubbocks book "Prehistoric times as illustrated by ancient remains and the manners and customs of modern savages" (1865) is partially based on this book [cited by Lubbock as "Grey's Australia" ] with Lubbock using Grey's observations to back up his theory of primitive peoples, an idea which is entirely rejected today as Aboriginals were definitely not primitive. A fact verifiable by the fact that they were able to reach Australia in a period where it required navigation and expectation of the grass being greener on the other side of both the Wallace line and the and the Timor trench both bodies of water that were never joined by land bridges. There is even the theory that Australian aboriginals were a more advanced form Homo Sapiens Sapiens and reached Australia at a time when Neanderthals were still present in Europe ! Grey Also wrote 'The Origin Of Civilization' (1870) and Marriage, Totemism and religion (1911) ; Lubbock cites "Grey's Australia" extensively in all of these books. It is clear from the pencil annotations in the end papers of both books that Lubbock used these exact works do do his research for his books on primitive moderns. The subjects and page numbers exactly correspond with the footnotes in his own works Subjects annotated Include Kissing, Mourning, Curious Logic, Character Of Laws, Dead Not Named, Ideas About Death, Property and Nightmares etc. Greys political life as Governor Of South Australia, New Zealand and the Cape Colony was similar to Lubbocks in development though Grey started from a lower station. Grey and Lubbock are recorded as meeting at least twice in 1869; once when Lubbock addressed a meeting of the Anthropological Association and and at a meeting of The X Club whose members included Herbert Spencer And Lubbock [Kerr Amassing Treasures For All Times P 34 , 197]. Original quarto leather binding, with five raised bands to spine with stamped gilt decorations and titles. The books have lightly bumped corners and worn edges. The base of each spine have light scars from tape removal. Two near fine cloth backed maps by Arrowsmith bound in as called for in contents list. The first after the contents page, the second on page 329. The first map is lightly yellowed with a few light spots of foxing. The second map is very lightly foxed. All plates are present and near fine with light foxing. The worst foxing surrounds the pages of each map. Both ffeps have been detached and taped in each volume. Each volume has 5 institutional stamps from the Australian Administrative Staff College and canceled stamps on the end papers and title page. On These two expeditions Grey was s. Book Description: John Murray, London, 1852. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A JOURNEY TO THE TEA COUNTRIES OF CHINA: Including Sung-Lo And the Bohea Hills: With a Short Notice of the East India Company's Tea Plantations in the Himalaya Mountains. Corners Lightly Bumped. Illustrated Spine And Covers In Gilt. Tiny Tear To One Illustrated Page Not Infringing On The Illustration. Complete With Map And 17 Illustrations. 23 Pages Of Publishers Advertisements Dated April 1852 So Perhaps A Second Printing Of This Classic Tale Of Industrial Espionage. Following The Treaty Of Nanjing In 1842, Fortune Was Sent Out By The Horticultural Society To Collect Plants In China. The Story Of Robert Fortune's Journey Is Told By Sarah Rose. Fortune, Robert. A Journey To The Tea Countries Of China; Including Sung-Lo And The Bohea Hills; With A Short Notice Of The East India Company 'S Tea Plantations In The Himalaya Mountains. London: John Murray, 1852. His Travels Resulted In The Introduction To Europe Of Many New, Exotic, Beautiful Flowers And Plants. His Most Famous Accomplishment Was The Successful Transportation Of Tea From China To India In 1848 On Behalf Of The British East India Company. In Total, Fortune Stayed In China For About Two And A Half Years, From 1848 To 1851. Similar To Other European Travelers Of The Period, Such As Walter Medhurst, Fortune Disguised Himself As A Chinese Merchant During Several, But Not All, Of His Journeys Beyond The Newly Established Treaty Port Areas. Not Only Was Fortune's Purchase Of Tea Plants Forbidden By The Chinese Government Of The Time, But His Travels Were Also Beyond The Allowable Day's Journey From The European Treaty Ports. Fortune Travelled To Some Areas Of China That Had Seldom Been Visited By Europeans, Including Remote Areas Of Fujian, Guangdong, And Jiangsu Provinces. Fortune Employed Many Different Means To Transport Tea Plants, Seedlings, And Other Botanical Discoveries, But He Is Most Well Known For His Use Of Nathaniel Bagshaw Ward's Portable Wardian Cases To Sustain The Plants. Using These Small Greenhouses, Fortune Introduced 20,000 Tea Plants And Seedlings To The Darjeeling Region Of India. He Also Brought With Him A Group Of Trained Chinese Tea Workers Who Would Facilitate The Production Of Tea Leaves. With The Exception Of A Few Plants Which Survived In Established Indian Gardens, Most Of The Chinese Tea Plants Fortune Introduced To India Perished. The Technology And Knowledge That Was Brought Over From China, However, May Have Been Instrumental In The Later Flourishing Of The Indian Tea Industry. Apart From His Many Contributions To Botanical History, Fortune Was The First European To Discover That So-Called Black Tea And Green Tea Were Actually From The Same Plant. Black cloth binding with titles in red on spine. browned page edges, crease to folding map in rear, occasional internal foxing of just a spot or two every 50 pages or so. Edges lightly bumped . Previous owners name blacked out on ffep. Signed by both the authour and his wife "Peter Molloy Yvonne Molloy October 1957" This book was first published in 1957, has 254 pages, 46 B/W photos, 13 chapters, 1 folded map of southern Sudan at the rear of the book. The book is dedicated to 'Fiona'. The foreword is by Capt Keith Caldwell. Colonel Peter Molloy (1915 - 2000) was for 6 years a Game Warden in the south Sudan. He traveled with his wife Yvonne, assembling information of tribal life and animals, mostly on foot safaris. Their house was in JUBA. In 1948, Molloy takes the job of Assistant Game Warden in Sudan, covering the area as big as Tanzania. He meets Yvonne in Khartoum and they soon marry and move to Juba. Soon, they start a good garden and adopt animals. Yvonne's first bush life was on the Nile, at MONGALLA, to see the elephants. Molloy brings down a 105 and 103 lbs tusker. Later he visits Badingilu pool with its extensive wildlife. Fishing was possible on Lake Nyubor, which also had beautiful bird life. Here Molloy photographs the rare Mrs Grays Lechwe. The Southern National Park has the rare Giant Eland and the Zande forest, some of the rare forest wildlife, especially the bongo. Peter and Yvonne Molloy take a river trip on the steamer 'Wingate', north, on the Nile to MALAKAL and then south again in a lorry on dusty roads. They run out of water and barely get back to the water supply. In 1952, Molloy explores 100 miles stretch of country west of Juba -'Moru Foot trek'. They were lucky to take a picture of Giant Eland bull. Returning to their Juba house, they looked forward to seeing their garden and animal zoo of wildlife babies. The highest peak in the area is Mt KINYETI(10,456ft) and the Kinyeti river was full of trout. The 'Acholi elephant' here carries the finest ivory in the world - soft, thick, heavy and creamy white. Next, they visit the BOMA plateau to the east, which is about 20 miles long(north to south). In the Mandari country, they hunt for elephants. Both Yvonne and Peter suffer with bilharzia and dysentery. They witness elephants rescuing a fallen bull elephant. At NIMULE National Park, there is excellent mountain and river scenery with elephants, white rhino, buffalo and hippo. Molloy then moved to Tanganyika as director of National Parks.
