Item Description: St Martin's Press. Paperback / softback. Book Condition: new. BRAND NEW, Sotah, Naomi Ragen, Beautiful, fragile Dina Reich, a young woman in Jerusalem's ultra-Orthodox haredi enclave, stands accused of the community's most unforgivable sin: adultery. Raised with her sisters to be an obedient daughter and a dutiful wife, Dina secretly yearned for the knowledge, romance, and excitement that she knew her circumscribed life would never satisfy. When her first romance is tragically thwarted, she willingly enters into an arranged marriage with a loving but painfully quiet man. Dina's deeply repressed passions become impossible to ignore, finding a dangerous outlet in a sudden and intense obsession with a married man, with terrible consequences. Exiled to New York City, Dina meets Joan, a modern secular woman who challenges all she knows of the world and herself. Set against the exotic backdrop of Jerusalem's glistening white stones and ancient rituals, "Sotah" is a contemporary story of the struggle to reconcile tradition with freedom, and faith with love. Item Description: Rarebooksclub.com, United States, 2012. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 246 x 189 mm. Language: English Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1893 Excerpt: .Gaskalgas is supposed to mean Seleucus, one of the kings of Syria, but it is not very clear to what particular eveut the Bath-Kol referred. It is further related,3 that Jochanan, who held the office of High Priest about 130 B.C., heard a voice preceding from the Holy of Holies, and saying: The youth who have gone to war to Antiochia, have been victorious. This is said to have happened on the day of Atonement, whilst the High Priest was performing his functions in the Sanctuary, and to have reference to an expedition against Samaria, in which the two sons of the High Priest were then engaged, and which they brought to a successful issue. 1 Gfroerer, Jolirhundert des Heils, page 176. Sotah 33, a. - Ibid. These voices are the only two which, in the wording of the original, have the ring of oracular utterances about them. It is likewise to be observed that, whilst the phrase generally runs: a Bath-Kol came forth, in these two instances the expression used is: he heard a Bath-Kol. There are veryfew other passages, where a person is stated to have heard a voice; there is one1 where a sage enters one of the ruins at Jerusalem, and hears a plaintive voice bewailing the fate of Israel, and there is another2 where a slave is encouraged to revolt by a Bath-Kol which he hears. In all these cases the Bath-Kol reflects the thoughts which occupied the minds of the individuals in moments of intense agitation, and is thus capable of a psychological explanation. As a linguistic peculiarity it maybe noted that in the two passages recording the voices heard by the High Priests, Tip P2, the daughter of voice, is treated as a masculine noun, the pronoun and verb in agreement with it being The next group of passage.
