Karl Marx, Max Weber y Émile Durkheim compartieron con los ilustrados la necesidad de hacer avanzar la democratización de las sociedades, así como la creencia en la función emancipadora de las ciencias sociales vertebradas por la historia social. Para ellos la educación no se agota en la instrucción, pues su principal finalidad es la formación de ciudadanos libres, conscientes, reflexivos, ciudadanos capaces de encarnar el ideal de perfección del humanismo clásico. Karl Marx, Max Weber y Emile Durkheim dieron en su tiempo una gran importancia a los sistemas de enseñanza, pero lejos de considerarlos absolutamente autónomos, independientes, cerrados en si mismos, fueron conscientes de que la génesis y el funcionamiento de las instituciones educativas son inseparables de los modos de producción, de las cambiantes formas de organización del Estado, así como del modo de concebir y articular a la sociedad. Los planteamientos de estos tres grandes científicos sociales no fueron totalmente coincidentes entre si, sin embargo, en nombre de un estatuto fuerte de ciudadanía, en nombre de un ideal de humanidad, abrieron la vía a una sociología crítica de los procesos sociales y de las instituciones.
