It was the scene of severe fighting in 1917 involving the Canadians. This book concentrates on the dramatic events following the battle of the Somme, when the Germans made a strategic withdrawal, shortening their lines and falling back on the prepared defences of the Hindenburg Line. leaving a wasteland of vacated towns, poisoned wells, felled trees, blown up buildings and booby traps in the territory they had evacuated. Bourlon Wood found itself in the front line with fighting concentrated on a bloody ravine.

Condition: New. Hardback, 520 pagesPublished Price £45 In the second volume of his definitive history of the final hundred years of British Cavalry, Lord Anglesey deals with a considerably more active period then that which he covered in the first. During the two decades now investigated, the stagnation which has settled on the military scene for the thirty-five years following Waterloo came to an abrupt end. The Army, and especially its mounted arm, were rudely shaken from their slumbers by the traumatic experiences of the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. Lord Anglesey describes in absorbing detail they part played by the cavalry in both. Of the battle of Balaclava particularly, he writes as fully as he has ever done before. He believes that âinaccuracies of detail and interpretation have created myths which needed, if not exploding, at least revising so as to resemble more closely what actually happened and to explain âThe Reason Whyâ. âThroughout the volume Lord Anglesey has relied upon considerable numbers of hitherto unpublished documents, mostly letters and diaries. He examines with the greatest thoroughness the social lives of both officers and men, unearthing much obscure but intriguing material from a large variety of sources. He spent many months quarrying in the Blue Books of the period, coming up with facts touching on every conceivable aspect of barrack-room life both at home and abroad- especially in India. Much of it had lain hidden amongst millions of unread, unheeded words from over a century. The Picture which results itâs as vivid as it is startling. It forms a significant contribution to mid-Victorian social history. Once again Lord Anglesey pays tribute to the extraordinary bravery and to the immense powers of endurance of officer, other ranks and, last but not least, their long-suffering horses.

Monchy and the countryside round about has returned, for the most part, to a tranquil, rural spot. Few of the topographical features that loomed so important in 1917 and 1918 have disappeared, so that this is a battlefield where it is easy to follow the action, whilst walking along its tracks shows how significant a vantage point this was to the combatants of 1917 and 1918. There are a few remnants of the war, and mementoes continue to give stark reminders of the bitter struggles of eighty years and more ago. In the spring of 1998 over twenty British soldiers whose bodies had been unexpectedly unearthed in the course of land development were buried in Monchy British cemetery.

It was the Australians' first major operation on the Western Front and pitted them against a part of the German line that was an object lesson in the sitting of a defence. The objectives and the tactics employed to achieve them were changed several times and the sufficiency of resources vigorously debated. After the war, the British and Australian Official Historians argued as to how the battle should be interpreted. Most of the correspondence that accompanied their exchange of drafts has not been published and makes compelling reading.

Lost between the battlefields of Ypres and Passchendaele to the north and the Somme to the south, and overshadowed by Vimy Ridge a few kilometres to the north, the village is rarely visited by the thousands of pilgrims who flock each year to the Western Front even though many hundreds of soldiers, airmen, civilians, and especially Royal Marines and sailors of the 63RD [Royal Naval] Division had lost their lives there.

During World War One, it was occupied by German troops. On July 1, 1916, it witnessed a diversionary attack launched by the British army. The territorial divisions 56th (London) Division and the 46th (North Midland) Division were tasked with diverting the opposing German 52nd Infantry Division (Baden) and 2nd Guards Reserve Division (Westphalia) from the "big push" further south along a 25 mile front that came to be called the Battle of the Somme for the nearby river. The author, Nigel Cave, has extensively studied and toured the battlefields of the Somme and has authored many of these guide books complete with the history of the battle, black and white photographs, maps, and information to facilitate a greater appreciation of them. This is a must have reference for anyone touring the battlefield and if you are unable to visit the site, it will allow you to vicariously examine it.

Looking into the face of our alleged ape ancestor, popular Christian apologist Hank Hanegraaff dissects and debunks the astonishingly weak arguments for the evolutionary theory, revealing it as nothing more than a "fairy tale for grown-ups." The author uses his own Memory Dynamics to make it easy for Christians to speak intelligently about evolution and speak persuasively about the Creator.

Nearly two decades ago Hank Hanegraaff's award-winning Christianity in Crisis alerted the world to the dangers of a cultic movement within Christianity that threatened to undermine the very foundation of biblical faith. But in the 21st century, there are new dangers--new teachers who threaten to do more damage than the last. These are not obscure teachers that Hanegraaff unmasks. We know their names. We have seen their faces, sat in their churches, and heard them shamelessly preach and promote the false pretexts of a give-to-get gospel. They are virtual rock stars who command the attention of presidential candidates and media moguls. Through make-believe miracles, urban legends, counterfeit Christs, and twisted theological reasoning, they peddle an occult brand of metaphysics that continues to shipwreck the faith of millions around the globe: "God cannot do anything in this earthly realm unless we give Him permission." "Keep saying it--'I have equality with God'--talk yourself into it." "Being poor is a sin." "The Jews were not rejecting Jesus as Messiah; it was Jesus who was refusing to be the Messiah to the Jews!" "You create your own world the same way God creates His. He speaks, and things happen; you speak, and they happen." Christianity in Crisis: 21st Century exposes darkness to light, pointing us back to a Christianity centered in Christ. From the Preface: "Having lost the ability to think biblically, postmodern Christians are being transformed from cultural change agents and initiators into cultural conformists and imitators. Pop culture beckons, and postmodern Christians have taken the bait. As a result, the biblical model of faith has given way to an increasingly bizarre array of fads and formulas.".

Do you want to take your leadership skills to a higher level? When Nehemiah confronted the task of rebuilding Jerusalem's wall, he was heartbroken by the damage he saw and nearly overwhelmed by the task that lay before him. Yet through the application of timeless leadership principles, Nehemiah completed this nearly impossible project, and laid a pattern for success which is just as valid for us today.Charles Swindoll brings his sensible and straightforward style to offer a deeply spiritual approach to the role of leader. Whatever the context, secular or ministerial, he demonstrates how to size up a task, organize and motivate a team, and respond to inevitable obstacles such as these: Unforeseen setbacksUnrelenting deadlinesCriticism and outside resistancePersonality conflictsFinancial pressures and temptations The insights that Swindoll draws from Nehemiah's wise administration will change your approach to leadership forever.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. Most of us feel utterly ransacked: we're waylaid by endless demands and stifling routines. Even our vacations have a panicky, task-like edge to them. "If I only had more time," is the mantra of our age. But is this the real problem? Widely acclaimed author Mark Buchanan states that what we've really lost is "the rest of God-the rest God bestows and, with it, that part of himself we can know only through stillness." Stillness as a virtue is a foreign concept in our society, but there is wisdom in God's own rhythm of work and rest. Sabbath is elixir and antidote. It is a gift for our sanity and wholeness--to prolong our lives, to enrich our relationships, to increase our fruitfulness, to make our joy complete. Jesus practiced Sabbath among those who had turned it into a dismal thing, a day for murmuring and finger-wagging, and he reminded them of the day's true purpose: liberation-to heal, to feed, to rescue, to celebrate, to lavish and relish life abundant. The gift of Sabbath is essential to our full humanity and faith, says Buchanan. Far from being some starched and dour day only to be endured, Sabbath is a day wide and bright, brimming with laughter, enough to lend beauty to all our other days. Readers will be changed forever by this pivotal book. "It seems very unsabbath-like to describe a book about Sabbath with the adverb 'urgently'--but we urgently need this book. Mark Buchanan shows us that our busyness is killing us--killin us--and that Sabbath is our best cure, our best path for rest and reverence and discipleship."--LAUREN WINNER, Best-selling author of Girl Meets God and Mudhouse Sabbath "With the easiness of long intimacy and a very deft hand, Buchanan here braids together into one gracious and sustaining strand the beauty of Sabbath, the wisdom of its keeping, and the generosity of God in gifting us with it. These pages are not just a blessing, they are a psalm that cries out to be joyfully engaged."--PHYLLIS TICKLE, Religion editor (ret.) Publishers Weekly and compiler of The Divine Hours.
