And above all it is well to know his father, that sturdy Yankee who wrote bad verse and good books- professor of anatomy, talkative five-foot -five Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table who lived upon applause and said so with engaging fr (illustrator). The Story of Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes is, in a broad sense, the story of his country. The narrative cannot begin with the flat date of his birth-1841. This was a man whose presence carried tradition. His roots reached deep into American earth. it was the strength of these roots that permitted so splendid a flowering. To know Justice Holmes at eighty-courtly, witty, scholarly, kind-it is well to have acquaintance with his Calvinist grandfather, Abiel Holmes; with his handsome, worldly great-grandfather, Judge Wendell; with his mother, from whom he inherited, he said, "a trace of melancholy." And above all it is well to know his father, that sturdy Yankee who wrote bad verse and good books-professor of anatomy, talkative five-foot-five Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table who lived upon applause and said so with engaging frankness. By his own confession, Justice Holmes was an "internal man," to whom ideas were more interesting than things. But he was also a man of action. "Life is action and passion," he said. "I think it is required of a man that he should share the action and passion of his time at peril of being judged not to have lived." Holmes shared his country's action and passion on the soldier's field and the judge's bench. If the significance of his life lay wholly in his legal achievements, there would be no place for a biography written by a layman. If its significance lay wholly in his written words, there would be no place for a biography at all.But Holmes' greatness lay most of all in his manner of meeting life. Mrs. Bowen shows us his genius for living, his genius for finding himself wholly, using himself wholly. He loved life and believed in it. For him the act of learning was always an adventure. Passionately, until the morning of his death, he pursued knowledge. "To know is not less than to feel," he said. "A valid idea is worth a regiment any day." A man who has fought in the ranks, who has shed blood for his country, has a right to say such things.

Parkman conceived the project in 1841, when he was a Harvard sophomore, & persisted in it despite chronic disorders that affected his eyes. The last volume of what he called his "history of the American forest" appeared almost 30 years after the first. Deservedly compared as a literary achievement to Gibbon's "The Decline & Fall of the Roman Empire", Parkman's accomplishment is hardly less awesome than the explorations & adventures he so vividly describes. His own indomitable spirit is reflected in 2 of the history's most fiercely resolute figures: La Salle, obsessed w/ colonizing the Mississippi Valley, & Frontenac, determined to bolster France's tottering position in the New World. He tells a story of great empires maneuvering in an unfamiliar & hostile terrain w/ all the guile, sophistication, & ingenuity learned from centuries of European rivalry. "Pioneers of France in the New World" (1865) begins w/ the early & tragic settlement of the French Huguenots in Florida, then shifts to the northern reaches of the continent & follows the expeditions of Samuel de Champlain up the St. Lawrence River & into the Great Lakes as he mapped the wilderness, organized the fur trade, promoted Christianity among the natives, & waged a savage forest campaign against the Iroquois. "The Jesuits in North America in the Seventeenth Century" (1867) traces the zealous efforts of the Jesuits & other Roman Catholic orders to convert the Native American tribes of North America. Jean de Brébeuf, Isaac Jogues, Marguerite Bourgeoys, Marie de l'Incarnation, & Joseph Bressani represent only a few of that resolute company, many of whom suffered captivity, torture, & martyrdom in the far corners of the wilderness. "La Salle & the Discovery of the Great West" (1869) records that explorer's voyages on the Ohio & Mississippi Rivers & his treks, often alone, across the vast western prairies & through the labyrinthine swamps of Louisiana. Although he won the respect & admiration of the Native Americans, La Salle often distrusted & alienated his associates. He survived 2 attempts to poison him before he was finally assassinated by his own men in a lonely Texas outpost. "The Old Régime in Canada" (1874) recounts the political struggles among the religious sects, colonial officials, feudal chiefs, royal ministers, & military commanders of Canada. Their bitter fights over the monopoly of the fur trade, the sale of brandy to the natives, the importation of wives from the orphanages & poorhouses of France, & the bizarre fanaticism of religious extremists & their "incessant supernaturalism" animate this pioneering social history of early Canada. Parkman's chronicle of nearly two & a half centuries of conflict will permanently transform our image of the American landscape. Written w/ verve, suppleness, & wit, this grand narrative history of political & theological conflict, of feats of physical endurance, of courtly manners practiced w/ comic disproportion against the backdrop of a looming wilderness, is itself one of the still-undiscovered treasures of our national & of world literature.

W/ characteristically calculated understatement, he attributed his enormous & varied successes to "my having learnt a little to scribble." This LOA collection of Franklin's works begins w/ letters sent from London (1757-1775) describing the events & diplomacy preceding the Revolutionary War. The volume also contains political satires, bagatelles, pamphlets, & letters written in Paris (1776-1785), where he represented the revolutionary United States at the court of Louis XVI, as well as his speeches given in the Constitutional Convention & other works written in Philadelphia (1785-1790), including his last published article, a searing satire against slavery. Also included are the delightfully shrewd prefaces to "Poor Richard's Almanack" (1733-1758) & their worldly, pungent maxims that have entered our American culture. Finally, the classic "Autobiography", Franklin's last word on his greatest literary creation "his own invented personality" is presented here in a new edition, completely faithful to Franklin's manuscript. * THE LIRBARY OF AMERICA is an award-winning, nonprofit program dedicated to publishing America's best & most significant writing in handsome, enduring volumes, featuring authoritative texts. The contrast between Europe & America, which gives a special dimension to all of James' cultural observations, is brilliantly deployed in these early works. "Watch and Ward," written when James was 28, is a Bostonian version of the Pygmalion story. In "Roderick Hudson," a headstrong & gifted young American sculptor loses his way among the temptations of Italy. "The American" was written in Paris & dramatizes a confrontation between the expatriate culture of American tourists & the protected world behind the barriers of old families & traditions. "The Europeans," by contrast, places 2 visiting European cousins in a pristine & conservative New England village. The little-known & charming "Confidence" is a light drawing-room comedy about the romantic entanglements of Americans traveling through Europe. * Henry James (1843-1916), born in New York City, was the son of noted religious philosopher Henry James, Sr., & brother of eminent psychologist & philosopher William James. He spent his early life in America & studied in Geneva, London & Paris during his adolescence to gain the worldly experience so prized by his father. He lived in Newport, went briefly to Harvard Law School, & in 1864 began to contribute both criticism & tales to magazines. In 1869, & then in 1872-74, he paid visits to Europe & began his first novel, "Roderick Hudson". Late in 1875 he settled in Paris, where he met Turgenev, Flaubert, & Zola, & wrote "The American" (1877). In December 1876 he moved to London, where 2 years later he achieved international fame w/ "Daisy Miller". Other famous works include "Washington Square" (1880), "The Portrait of a Lady" (1881), "The Princess Casamassima" (1886), "The Aspern Papers" (1888), "The Turn of the Screw" (1898) & 3 large novels of the new century, "The Wings of the Dove" (1902), "The Ambassadors" (1903) & "The Golden Bowl" (1904). In 1905 he revisited the United States & wrote "The American Scene" (1907). During his career he also wrote many works of criticism & travel. Although old & ailing, he threw himself into war work in 1914, & in 1915, a few months before his death, he became a British subject. In 1916 King George V conferred the Order of Merit on him. He died in London in February 1916. * The Library of America is an award-winning, nonprofit program dedicated to publishing America's best & most significant writing in handsome, enduring volumes, featuring authoritative texts. Stowe's moving Christian epic turned millions of Americans against slavery, bringing the "peculiar institution" immeasurably closer to its fiery destruction. In this LOA volume are the best and most enduring works of Harriet Beecher Stowe, "the little woman," as Abraham Lincoln said when he met her in 1861, "who wrote the book that made this great war." He was referring, w/ rueful exaggeration, to 'Uncle Tom's Cabin' (1852), which during its first year had sold over 300,000 copies. Contemporary readers can still appreciate the powerful effects of its melodramatic characterizations & its unapologetic sentimentality. They can also recognize in its treatment of racial violence some of the brooding imagination & realism that anticipates Faulkner's rendering of the same theme. Stowe was charged w/ exaggerating the evils of slavery, but her stay in Cincinnati, Ohio, where her father (the formidable Lyman Beecher, head of the Lane Theological Seminary) gave her a close look at the miseries of the slave communities across the Ohio River. People in her circle of friends were continually harboring slaves who escaped across the river from Kentucky on the way, they hoped, to Canada. Two other novels, along w/ 'Uncle Tom's Cabin', show the range & variety of her literary accomplishment. 'The Minister's Wooing' (1859) is set in Newport, Rhode Island, after the Revolution. It is a romance based in part on the life of Stowe's sister, and it traces to a happy ending the conflicts in a young woman between adherence to Calvinistic rigor & her expression of preference in the choice of a marital partner. The third novel, 'Oldtown Folks' (1869), confirms Stowe's genius for the realistic rendering of ordinary experience, her talent for social portraiture w/ a keen satiric edge, & her subtlety in exploring a wide group of themes, from child-rearing practices & religious controversy to romantic seduction & betrayal. But finally, it is the old town & a way of life that no longer exists that is the true subject of this elegiac novel. * THE LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an award-winning, nonprofit program dedicated to publishing America's best & most significant writing in handsome, enduring volumes, featuring authoritative texts. Embracing over 1,000 poems by nearly 150 poets, 'American Poetry: The Nineteenth Century' reveals for the first time the full beauty & diversity of that tradition. UNPRECEDENTED in its COMPREHENSIVE sweep & in its textual AUTHORITY, this two volume anthology reassesses & restores America's poetic heritage. The century's greatest poets are here presented in generous selections: Dickinson, Poe, Emerson, Melville, & Whitman. Alongside these are the currently undervalued achievements of Whitter, Longfellow, Bryant, Lowell, & Holmes, as well as poems only now finding full recognition: mystical sonnets by Jones Very, the Romantic fantasies of Maria Gowen Brooks, the exquisite fin de siecle verse of Trumbull Stickney. Special features include American Indian poetry in 19th-centuery versions, & a rich gathering of anonymous folk songs, ballads, & hymns whose lyrics echo in our American language more than a century later. * The LIBRARY OF AMERICA is an award-winning, nonprofit program dedicated to publishing America's best & most significant writing in handsome, enduring volumes, featuring authoritative texts.
