First Edition Stated. Near Fine, Gilt Brilliant, No Marks. Dust Jacket Priced $3.00, Wear, Small Losses At Corners, 2 3/4" X 1 1//2" Deep V-Chip At Top Of Rear Panel. Interesting Commentaries, Revealing About What Prominent Americans Thought Civilization Was (In 1930). However, The Beard Studies Omit Any Response From Any In The Great Masses Of The World Who Do Not Invent Or Manufacture, Nor Own Or Manage, The Technological Enterprises Which Are The Essence Of Technological Development, Which Is The Primary Concern Of These Respondents; Nor Has Any Study In The Succeeding 90 Years Attempted To Explore The Meaning Of Culture So Except In The Most Superficially Journalistic And Condescending Manner. But What Could Go Wrong? Aren't The Elites, After All, Elite? It Isn't Like Unprincipled Demagogues, Secure With All The Advantages Of Modern Technology, Would Incite Violence Amongst The Vast Majority, With Relatively Ever-Declining Options Ever-Declining Self-Esteem And Relatively Ever-Declining Standards Of Living. Why Bother Talking To Them To See Anything More Than Whether They Agree Or Not? And Who Will Ever Want To Read Ordinary People's Opinions When The Questions They're Asked Are Always Stupidly Closed-Ended And Never Followed Up By Why Etc.?

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very good +. Quarto size, 1324 pp. While the heydey of the railroads may now be waning, many of us fondly remember both the experience and the romance of travel by rail. Now largly a commercial enterprise, it continues to fascinate and its history studied. This volume truly is a comprehensive Encyclopedia of everything one needs to know to fully understand the workings of the railroad. Replete with photographs and diagrams of trains and rail cars, this volume is a thorough source of information for all things trains, with a lengthy dictionary of the terminology found in the field. With the prior owner name of Kirke W. Comstock on the front pastedown, with the date of 2/1/44 (shortly after publication). While we cannot be certain, this may be the Kirke W.Comstock (1905-1947) who was "known nationally among builders of model railroads" and to whom, therefore, the details on railroad cars and trains would be of utmost importance (n.b., quote from the "Battle Creek Inquirer", August 28, 1947). ___DESCRIPTION: Full brown cloth, blind-debossed ruled borders and gilt rectangle with embossed lettering on the front board, gilt lettering and title embossed within gilt rectangle on the spine, copious black-and-white photographs, drawings, and diagrams throughout; quarto size (11.75" by 8.5"), pagination: [1-4] 5-1324. ___CONDITION: A bit better than very good, with clean boards, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and the only prior owner marking being the name and date referred to above; head of the spine gently bumped, corners also gently bumped with the cloth on the top rear corner just beginning to fray slightly, light soiling to the edges of the text block with light foxing to the top edge, front hinge tender (but board holding well), slightly cracked gutters at pages 1230 and 1231 and pages 1258 and 1259, pencil notations to the rear paste-down from a prior bookseller. Still a better than very good copy with an interesting provenance. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this is a large and heavy book, and therefore additional postage will apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
