With illustrations. 140 pp. Maurits Ver Huell (1787-1860), naval officer, writer, and nature lover, wrote literary stories and travelogues about Brazil and the East Indies. This book presents his romanticized episode from a three-year captivity, with historical commentary. It recounts his first major sea voyage to Batavia, which unexpectedly ended in 1807 with a long stay in Salvador da Bahia, and shows how this period shaped his life and interests.
