Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 8vo, hardcover in dust jacket with mylar cover, 131 pp. The author (born 1922) was educated in England, and then after a term with the R.A.F. during the Second World War, left Britain to serve in various provincial educational posts in Africa. He published a number of well-regarded books of poetry. This volume was undertaken after a term as Education Officer in Benin, western Nigeria. The blurb claims it to be "the first account of the ancient West African kingdom of Benin written for the general reader since 1897, the year of the Massacre, when the capitol became notoriously known for its human sacrifices as "the City of Blood." Contains photographs and descriptions of the famous Benin bronzes, and traces cultural changes with the influx of European customs. Condition: Very Good with a Very Good dust jacket. The book jacket was, at some point, proactively taped with a reinforced tape on the interior side next to the book. This has closed an inch and a half tear to the foot of the d/j spine. The adhesive has ghosted onto the right side of the jacket, apparent along the lighter colored rear of jacket. It has also offset onto the pastedowns. Otherwise, the book is a little age- toned on the interior, but very sound and clean.
