Brossura. Condition: new. Edited by Foletti I.English Text.Roma, 2013; paperback, pp. 192, b/w ill., cm 17x24.(I Libri di Viella. Arte). Peter Brown has described the position of holy bodies in the Early Christian period as a "place between Earth and Heaven." The principal aim of this book is to deal with precisely this intersection between two worlds expressed by the Dead, and in particular by their images and their faces. The first part of this book looks into the portrait and its function, and the reason for which Late Antiquity, following a custom it inherited from previous eras, covered itself with individual images of the deceased. As in previous eras, the portrait appears, above all, to be an attempt to express the individual in his or her entirety; the techniques and "instruments" perfected in the course of the the 3rd century, however, lead to divergent formal and conceptual results. The second question, answered more briefly, deals with the perception and representation of the dead body as a whole, defined by David Le Breton as "la souche identitaire de l'homme." The question asked is a fundamental one, since we are confronted with humanity itself after its passage to that which lies beyond: does the body become just a memory or does it preserve the real presence of the person who once existed? Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Despite the series of social, climate, military, and pandemic crises that marked 13th and 14th century Europe, ivory carvings experienced a boom in this period. This apparent contradiction raises questions about the value and significance of these luxury goods in elite society. Analysis of the secular iconographies wrought in ivory on household items offers insight into the lives, tastes, and literary knowledge of courtly owners, as well as into related social structures. Variously engaging with the concept of crisis, the volume's contributors resituate the reception of such objects within the contexts of politics, warfare, and the machinations of the court. This recontextualization yields compelling new perspectives on Gothic ivories, in some cases challenging long-standing assumptions. 440 pp. Englisch, Französisch.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This book explores the viewing and sensorial contexts in which the bodies of kings and queens were involved in the premodern societies of Europe, Asia, and Africa, relying on a methodology that aims to overcoming the traditional boundaries between material studies, art history, political theory, and Reprasentationsgeschichte. More specifically, it investigates the multiple ways in which the ruler's physical appearance was apprehended and invested with visual, metaphorical, and emotional associations, as well as the dynamics whereby such mise-en-scene devices either were inspired by or worked as sources of inspiration for textual and pictorial representations of royalty. The outcome is a multifaced analysis of the multiple, imaginative, and terribly ambiguous ways in which, in past societies, the notion of a God-driven, eternal, and transpersonal royal power came to be associated with the material bodies of kings and queens, and of the impressive efforts made, in different cultures, to elude the conundrum of the latter's weakness, transitoriness, and individual distinctiveness. The fifteen studies gathered in the book reflect on the mise-en-scene and representational devices of medieval rulers' bodily appearances in Angevin, Aragonese, Armenian, Byzantine, Carolingian, English, Ethiopian, Georgian, Leonese, Sasanian and Sienese traditions. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The essays collected in this volume emphasize the importance of Svaneti, a historical region of the Georgian Great Caucasus as an unparalleled treasury of medieval arts, describe some of its outstanding monuments, provide interpretations of their political and religious role at the intersection of different cultural traditions, and explore the dynamics whereby they have constantly invested with new functions and associations throughout their long history. The present, multi-authored volume is the earliest work in English devoted to the extraordinary artistic and cultural heritage of Svaneti, a historical region of the Georgian Great Caucasus.
