Januar 1974 reiste Joseph Beuys zusammen mit Klaus Staeck und Gerhard Steidl zum ersten Mal nach Amerika. Dieser Tripp war eine bis ins Detail geplante Performance in Flugzeugen, Taxen, Hotels, Universitäten und Galerien, die umfassend mit der Kamera dokumentiert wurde. Dabei entstanden Einzelbilder und Fotoserien, aber auch Filmstills zu Dillinger und The Dead Eyes of London. Unmittelbar nachdem Beuys nach Deutschland zurückgekehrt war, wurde das Material für dieses Buch ausgewertet. Die Verwirklichung des Projektes verschob sich jedoch immer wieder. Noch im Oktober 1985, kurz vor seinem Tod, hat Joseph Beuys die Reihenfolge der Fotos und den Umbruch für dieses Buch festgelegt. This trip was a performance planned down to the last detail in airplanes, taxis, hotels, universities and galleries, which was extensively documented on camera. This resulted in individual images and photo series, but also film stills from Dillinger and The Dead Eyes of London. Immediately after Beuys returned to Germany, the material for this book was evaluated. However, the realization of the project kept being postponed. In October 1985, shortly before his death, Joseph Beuys decided on the order of the photos and the layout for this book. This extraordinary travel report is now being published in a new edition.
