Laid-in is a one-page colour-illustrated magazine ad for this volume which reads in part "The life and colour of the golden days of sail, painted by Mr. Jack Spurling (30 colour plates and one photogravure) and described by Mr. Basil Lubbock. As great a treasure for book-lovers as for sea-lovers."
