First Edition
First edition, first printing, of this collection of songs from inmates in Nazi concentration camps in Latvia and Lithuania. Johanna Spector (1915-2008) was born and grew up in Latvia. Her husband Robert was killed by the Nazis in 1941, and she spent the war years in various concentration camps. After the war she moved to the US and worked to preserve Jewish folk music. Her collection gathers 15 songs in Yiddish and German with their melodies, as heard in the camps and from survivors. Each is preceded by an explanation of its origin and explanation. The collection, one of the earliest such to be published, is dedicated to those who died in the camps. The publisher, the American Joint Distribution Committee, had worked in the war to aid Jews fleeing Europe, and after the war, it provided relief to Holocaust survivors and remaining Jewish communities in Europe. Octavo. Original blue wrappers. A little rubbed, contents slightly toned: a very good copy.
