Kepcsarnok Visit the exhibitions of Kepcsarnok is a 1966 contemporary art and commercial advertising poster designed by Matyas Sinka Poster to promote the K pcsarnok Hall of Paintings in Budapest Kepcsarnok was the company dealing in contemporary fine and applied art… during the socialist era in Hungary The company was founded in 1948 when the shops selling art supplies and commercial galleries were nationalized At the beginning the Kepcsarnok consisted of a few art supply shops and some galleries and its main responsibility was art commerce In 1954 Fine Art Foundation of the Hungarian People s Republic took the leadership of the Hall of Pictures and its scope of duty widened with products of applied arts The main goal of the Kepcsarnok is to transfer the values carried in Hungarian visual art to as many people as possible The composition resembles a framed picture where the frame is built up by the names of the many galleries that belonged to the Hall of Pictures The names are written in different typographical styles and this makes the image exciting as well as the seemingly random alternation of black and white blocks The contrast between the black and white frame and the red picture is also a determining factor in the atmosphere of the composition The logo of Kepcsarnok is in red as well what balances the overall effect of the poster Fine, light fold marks and wear.

Original vintage commercial poster from the beginning of the 1950s It was designed by M ty s Sinka M ty s Sinka is a fine Hungarian poster artist who started his career in the 1950s During his artistic activity until the end of the 1970s he designed numerous prominen…t posters and album covers He created many humorous designs for campaigns for prevention from accidents promoting healthcare traffic rules and anti alcoholism and he designed skillful commercial posters as well This work is a good example for the latter type The advertisement was created for the Race Shoe Polish The poster is a simple elegant piece The composition shows the logo and the trademark of the brand with a shiny pair of smart black male shoes in front of a black and yellow background The elements are carefully positioned in the middle of the poster and are highlighted by the dramatic visual effect of the strong contrast of the background colours In addition the yellow colour patch can seem as a spotlight behind the trademark so the highlight of the elements is even more enhanced This strong focus on the brand design recalls the tendency of the Sachplakat The so called object posters featured a realistic depiction of the advertised product with only a few or no other elements German poster art was revolutionized by Lucien Bernhardt who is considered to be the father of Sachplakat style His works in 1905 were striking with their stark simplicity and clean bold typography among the common stilted Art Nouveau pieces of the period In Hungary M rton Tuszkay was the first one to introduce the new approach in advertising in the 1910s Even though Sinka didn t present the shoe polish product itself in its original packaging on this poster his work can be considered as an object poster Specific elements of the product s original packaging design are highly emphasized which make a concentrated composition The skillful use and the stressing of strong contrasting colours flat shapes spectacular angles and perspectives made object posters interesting as well as the effective typographic design This poster represents the excellence of the product by depicting the perfectly polished shoes in an impressive angle In the meantime the entire design has an ethereal flat like character with the floating trademark and logo of the brand However the spotlight effect of the background enhances the three dimensions These simultaneous but contradictory visual impressions create an exciting and complex visual world around the captured elements All in all this clean and tight composition was a modern piece in its time It shows the elegance and decorativeness of Sinka s commercial designs on which he could choose the proper tools to create the perfect atmosphere It is also a good indicator of how the object poster style remained up to date and varied even in the middle of the century in Hungary similarly to Switzerland Certainly the pieces could be effective advertisements as they imprinted the specific design of products and brands to the mind of viewers Fine, restored fold marks, small tears.

M ty s Sinka was an important poster artist who started his career in the 1950s First he created socialist realist designs as it was expected in the period Later in the 1960s and 1970s he designed a lot of interesting and humorous posters but also des…igned vinyl album covers Besides graphical activity Sinka also painted landscapes in a traditional manner This design was also influenced by this tendency The maquette is a socialist realist painted artwork for a later to be event poster of the scrap metal collecting month It was in May according to the inscription Although posters have different purposes than paintings this work is really painting like not without reason In Socialist Realism there was not such a difference between painting art and poster art as the political leadership used art as a tool to propagate Stalinist ideology irrespectively from the genre The message was the point which had to be expressed clearly for ordinary people That was the reason why realist manner was a must to employ The content was an extensive propaganda with typical figures of smiling peasants strong working class man and cheerful children in uniform usually appearing in stereotypical environments like wheat fields factories or local natural spots All these things were aimed to reflect that the economy is strong people are happy and everything is working fine under the control of the political leadership Socialist realist designs also had to encourage people to work more and better to satisfy the requirement of submitting goods for the cooperatives to work according to safety instructions to bond peace loans to harvest the first grain to the homeland etc all in all to be good socialist citizens This kind of education started from a young age which is perfectly shown by this artwork This time the duty was collecting scrap metal and the target group of the event were children Two male children are captured walking and carrying a huge basket full of scrap metal together in a pure natural environment The figures are wearing black shorts white shirt and a red neckpiece the easily recognizable uniform of the pioneer movement It was an organization for children operated by the communist party It was quite similar to the Scout movement with the exception of being dependent on government control and political parties That was why for example promotion of sports and outdoor skills was a shared principle but the pioneer movement also included teaching of communist principles Although the faces of the children are not very detailed they seem to be happy and determined There are several possible reasons why the faces are not detailed maybe it was the first version of the design and the artist left the faces in this condition for possible later modification or it was the final design but the artist intended to make children enable to identify with the figures They are strong and suitable for the duty which they accomplish perfectly as they collected a huge pile of scrap metal.

Festive book weeks are nationally organised cultural events which are being held since 1929 in Hungary The first event took place in Budapest but later numerous other cities started to participate The aim of the event is to gain bigger popularity for reading b…ooks and familiarize the earlier and contemporary books with audience This piece was created for the festive book week between 1952 and 1956 The painted poster artwork was designed by Matyas Sinka Sinka is a fine Hungarian graphic artist who was mostly active between the 1950s and the 1970s He created many humorous and interesting posters for official propaganda and for campaigns for prevention from accidents promoting healthcare traffic rules and anti alcoholism But he also designed numerous commercial and cultural posters He refined his often cartoon like expressive style mostly during the 1960s This work however had been designed in the beginning of the 1950s in the era of intense political control over art The artwork is highly connected to the period by its graphical character as it is a good representative of the socialist realist design of the age Socialist Realism was the key tool of the Hungarian political dictatorship in their extensive propaganda activity in the first part of the 1950s just as in other Eastern European countries in the Soviet Union As other artists poster designers also had to meet the requirements of a socialist content and a realist manner Thus mostly a heroic figurative portrayal was employed to make the propagandistic messages clear and easy to understand This work is a good example of the tendency that a lot of poster designs looked like a cut out of a painting as the differences of the two genres was artificially blurred Gunda applied slow brushwork and a detailed realist portrayal and he represented the event in a propagandistic way with national and socialist symbols This way the content of the poster was also accepted by the political party A woman can be seen in the foreground as she is obsessively reading a book She is wearing a light pink shirt buttoned up until the neck Her appearance and activity reflects the proper behaviour supported and expected by the state In the background the national flag appears above and a huge crowd of people is displayed as they surround the statue of S ndor Pet fi the iconic Hungarian poet He had lived a century before and was given the name the poet of the people so the socialist political leadership exploited his symbolic figure for their own political purposes The statue depicted him with the arm lifted up high and this move is imitated by the people around The resulting composition has a highly uplifted and an immensely demagogue character to fulfil the propagandistic role Reading a book is represented here as a strangely heroic activity to emphasize the importance of the event Today it is interesting to see the painterly nature of the poster maquette and because of the propaganda the piece is an exciting historic relic as well.

A pair of beautiful painted poster artworks created by M ty s Sinka They were created for the opening of the Gundel restaurant which is one of the most famous restaurants of Hungary Its script says The Zoo Gundel Restaurant has opened as the restauran…t is located in the City Park in the neighbourhood of the Zoo The history of the Gundel Restaurant dates back to the end of the 19th century The restaurant was built in 1894 and its walls were decorated by the most important painters of the 19th and the 20th centuries The building evokes the atmosphere of the turn of the century Originally the restaurant was led by Ferenc Wampetics but it was taken over by K roly Gundel the son of J nos Gundel who had been already the owner of several successful hotels and restaurants by that time The restaurant gained its international fame under the lead of the control of K roly Gundel K roly Gundel refined the Hungarian cuisine and created delicious dishes of his own taste His pioneering work placed Hungary on the world map of gastronomy K roly Gundel also documented gastronomic history He collected local recipes all over the Carpathian Basin as Hungary s world famous composers Kod ly and Bartok recorded Hungarian folk music He is the author of cook books translated into dozens of languages The Restaurant earned his shine since K roly Gundel opened this house in 1910 Its reputation was strong enough to survive the stormy decades of war and communist nationalisation Having been privatised in 1992 the GUNDEL took back its deserved position in Hungary as the country s leading restaurant source www gundel hu en The poster artworks were created in 1953 when the restaurant had a reopening after the nationalisation in 1949 The decade of the 1950s was a hard period in Hungarian history as well as in Hungarian poster design The political regime also determined the rules of arts and the norms of Socialist Realism were to follow for poster designers too It produced a very typical painting like style of posters in the first part of the decade M ty s Sinka designed a plenty of posters in every kind of subject even the propaganda of the period He often created humorous desings for campaigns for prevention from accidents healthcare promotions etc but he also created interesting movie posters in a style recalling cartoons These poster artworks are also different from the typical socialist realist compositions of the period they rather reveal the own cartoon like expressiveness of the artist These pieces are beautifully painted compositions in a similar portrayal The first version shows the restaurant from a distance surrounded by a crowd of people and decorative trees can be seen in the foreground with the script above The second version also contains the view of similar trees but the script is the main element here in a delicate frame The naturalistic motifs and the typographic design are depicted skillfully and in an impressive portrayal contributing to the decorative designs Both versions of artworks were created to be reproduced later as a tram poster Although a final poster wasn t produced of them these poster artworks are highly elegant and decorative.
