DJ has seen much better days. to front - it has one corner missing in a 3 inch radius ( torn off for use? ) and has cuts and several tears to the edges - as well as an almost circular, but small, piece out of the top front of the dj. dj over spine has 1/3 at borttom missing - and the dj at back has another corner missing with irregularchipping, as well as a 3 inch open tear with a flap! it is all there - in sense it is intact and wrapped around the book tightly - but unsightly. it is an uncommon to find a dj wit this edition. signed by Cotterell, ( "we were there" ) with a laid-in full page article about him and his poetry and military service. no dj, clean dark blue cloth with gilt titles on spine, a very good clean tight copy with no marks or inscriptions) octavo 92pp. First edition. 72 poems, all written in Italy, including Sicily, during the first nine months of the Italian campaign. First Edition (first printing) this copy signed and dated (August 1951) by Walter de la Mare beneath his photographic portrait on p. 135. 8vo. 195pp. Blue buckram lettered in gold at spine. Top edge gilt. With a superb colour lithographic frontispiece by Barnett Freedman (reproduced on the dust wrapper), and several photographs and illustrations (including a caricature by Max Beerbohm). A sliver of discolouration to spine ends and a light scattering of spotting to the fore edge. A very good copy in non-price-clipped dust wrapper, rubbed and chipped at the upper edge with an inch square portion of loss from the head of the spine panel, two smaller areas of loss and a little accompanying creasing. A selection of celebrations and works produced in honour of de la Mare, with other contributors including Henry Williamson, T.S.Eliot, Siegfried Sassoon, V.Sackville-West, Laurence Whistler, John Masefield, C.Day Lewis, &c. About this Item: Faber & Faber, 1931, 1931. 1st edition thus. Hardcover. This is no 209 of 300 copies only for sale, signed by both Sassoon and Freedman on the limitation page. Original pictorial vellum from a Freedman illustration, coloured pictorial endpapers, beautifully clean pages, deckle edges as issued, 15 full-page colour paintings and numerous line drawings by Freedman. In a fine dustwrapper, with just one small nick to the top front corner. With the very scarce original illustrated slipcase, which is still sturdy but a little abraded at the extremities, with a couple of small tape repairs on the corners. An extremely nice copy of the limited, illustrated edition of Sassoon's classic autobiographical novel of life in the First World War, the second in his 'Sherston' trilogy.
