Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Building on the Rock by J. S. Shoemaker (and, the missionaries themselves) was published by the Mennonite Publishing House, Scottdale, Pennsylvania, in 1926. This 198-page, 7 1/4" X 9 1/4", 88-year-old, believed-to-be First Edition offering is an ex-Pike Mennonite Sunday School Library copy in VG- condition. This book, at age 88, is surprisingly firm and crisp, physically. There are minimal library markings-- a 3 1/8" X 5 1/2" beige circulation card pocket, centered on the back paste down page, and "Pike Mennonite Sunday School Library", stamped in grey-black caps near the top of front paste down page/printed in blue ink near top of front loose end page. The text's pages as well as front/back endpapers have yellowed modestly over time. From J. S. Shoemaker's Introductory, ".All who are filled with the missionary spirit, and interested in the foreign mission activities of the Church, in extending the borders of Christ's kingdom among the heathen in India and elsewhere, will certainly appreciate having the privilege of being in possession of this unique volume which is not only a storehouse of missionary information, but a memorial of the twenty-fifth anniversary of our India Mission activities as well. .Brother J. A. Ressler and Dr. W. B. Page and wife were our pioneer missionaries, commissioned by the Mennonite Evangelizing and Benevolent Board, and sent forth to bring both physical and spiritual relief to multitudes in India who were hungering for both body and soul food in that dark land of heathendom. .On March 24, 1899, the newly-appointed missionaries landed in India., the field of labor to which they had been officially assigned. After careful investigation and much needed preparation, work was opened November 22, 1899, in the vicinity of Dhamtari, C.P., India, by this small band of workers." There are literally dozens of vintage, black and white photographs throughout text to provide faces, form, and structure to many of the people and places discussed/mentioned in same. Also included are a Contents Page and Appendix(providing detailed statistics for such as "Opening of Charitable Institutions", "Opening of Evangelistic Outstations", "Opening of Schools", "Ordinations", and, "Roster of Missionaries"). Thank you very much!!
