Scherman (March 2, 1916 May 5, 1997) was an American photojournalist and editor renowned for his work with LIFE magazine. Born in Manhattan, New York, he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1936 and soon after joined LIFE as a photographer. During World War II, Scherman covered major events including the liberation of Paris and the Nazi concentration camps. One of his most iconic images features fellow photojournalist Lee Miller bathing in Adolf Hitler's Munich apartment in 1945.After the war, Scherman transitioned to editorial roles at LIFE, eventually becoming a senior editor. He also co-authored several notable books, including Literary England (1944) and Literary America: A Chronicle of American Writers from 16071952 (1978) , the latter in collaboration with his wife, Rosemarie Redlich. Rosemarie Redlich Scherman (1923 August 11, 2001) was an American journalist and freelance writer who later became a historian. She married David E. Scherman in June 1949, and together they had two sons, John and Tony. In 1978, she co-authored Literary America with her husband, a book featuring photographs of American literary landmarks accompanied by concise biographical and historical texts. Rosemarie passed away at her home in Stony Point, New York, in 2001.
