Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. An anthology of poetry including Tolkien's first notable published work, 'Goblin Feet.' Tolkien evidently later wished to distance himself from the poem, centering it within a Victorian tradition of dreamy, inane fairy lore, as epitomized by the fraudulent Cottingley photographs. Certainly the subjects of 'Goblin Feet' are considerably less grand than those of the legendarium; but one can still see a line of continuity to the ideas of those larger stories, which perhaps found early expression in 'Goblin Feet.' It is playful, poignant, and interested in yearning and loss, a microcosm of the emotion Tolkien later evokes writ large through the passing of ages and journeys into the west. No jacket, as issued. 71 pages. Dark blue papered boards and cream parchment spine, with title plates at spine and front board. Rubbed, faded in places and with slight staining, with heavier wear to title plate at spine including obscured lettering and chipping to edges. Frayed to corners and spine foot. Spine square. Binding sound. Gift inscription inked to FFEP and dated 1915; additional owner markings by William Feindel and his wife Faith (Feindel was a Rhodes scholar at Merton College while Tolkien was there in the 1940s). Foxed to endsheets and first and last few pages; brief marginal notes penned at page 27 and 35; corner creases at page 35 and at the last page of text. Interior else clean. This little volume also includes early published work by Aldous Huxley and Dorothy Sayers.
