Auguste Andre Lacon (engraver A F Pannemaker) (illustrator). 1901 US Publisher, but printed in Edinburgh, distributed by WH Smith in the UK (interesting!). No dust jacket, blue cloth boards with gold and ivory lettering. Spine fading to brown with a small horizontal rip in the lower third of the spine. Back cover board shows fading due to sunlight. Foxing evident particularly on end papers and page edges but also evident throughout the book. Contains 24 plates, illustrated by Auguste Andre Lancon (engraved by Adolphe Francois Pannemaker). An account of the life and times of a bear named Martin, tracing his days and adventures, and telling of his many friends as his experiences with his tormentors. The first half of the book tells of Martin's life of freedom in wilds of the Alps. Alas, Martin is caught by bear hunters, and the story reveals his shifting fortunes, including a period as a captive traveling show-bear, and finally on to his escape and pleasant golden years in a well appointed zoo. (He lives on buns!) The author, Sir Sainthill Eardley-Wilmot (1852-1929), was a British civil servant, forestry officer, and conservationist who worked primarily in India and Burma. He was also the author of The Life of an Elephant (1875) and The Life of a Tiger (1911).

Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1930. First edition. viii, 200pp., frontispiece, 7 black and white plates, and drawings within the text. Sir Sainthill Eardley-Wilmot KCIE (1852-1929) was a British civil servant, forestry officer and conservationist who worked primarily in India and Burma and served as Inspector-General of Forests. He joined the Indian Forest Service in December 1873, and was appointed to the old North-West Provinces and Oudh region of colonial India. He rose to prominence within the Service for his conservation methods and unorthodox approach. He advocated methods of numbering and ageing trees, and also introduced a ban on the felling of the best specimens which had been a common practice in Colonial India. This book contains sketches that were jotted down at intervals during his 25 years' service in India. Contents include: A Night in the Forest; Giants of the Forest; A Summer in the Himalayas; Man-eating Tigers; The Supernatural in India; and How John Nestall Escaped the Elephant. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a small gold illustration of a tiger head on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling to the boards. The corners and spine ends are bumped and there is a dent on the top edge of the front board. There is some rubbing to the spine edges and a small hole in the cloth near the top of the rear spine edge. The contents are tight and clean with two names written on the front fixed endpaper.
