Octavo (8 1/4" x 6 3/4") recased in original publisher's spine and covers with gilt lettering to spine with "Jazz Records A-Z 1897-1931 Index" bound in original publisher's wrappers. Revised edition, first published in 1969. This set of books covers in the fullest possible detail all known recordings made in the years between 1897 and 1942 in the ragtime, jazz and swing idioms, including also a number of dance records of the kind described at the time of their original issue as "hot." For the most part only records made by American and British musicians are listed, as with few exceptions (such as Django Reinhardt), European, Australian and South American artists do not mean very much outside their native lands. Excellent work on some of these has been done already by radiographers such as Horst Lange (Germany), Giuseppe Barazetta (italy) and Mike Sutcliffe (Australia). Condition: Rebound with the original spine laid on with red covers laid on. Previous owner's notes and checks marks in pencil to margins. Some pages dogeared else a good set.

First Edition
The self published First Edition of the standard work on Jazz Discography in its original bulky 11" x 9" maroon, two post binder, of 884 Gestetner'd pages from the authors typescript. [ A labour of love if ever there was one] In addition this copy has a possibly unique 64 page section headed"The Road to Bing Crosby" comprising a discography of "all known recordings" inserted after the titlepage. Volume 2 a more conventional octavo of 680 pages but still from typed matrices, ends with an [typed] advertisement for VJM [ Vintage Jazz Mart ] In much better than the usual "Used to death" condition and a treasure chest to the Philip Larkin generation of Jazz fans. Together with the First Edition of "The Jazz Makers" 1958 by Shapiro & Nat Hentoff. Very heavy; please request accurate shipping quote or post free in the UK for payment by cheque.
