In 1932 British physicist Nevill Mott published his quan…titative theory of the polarization of electrons by double scattering, based on Dirac's theory of the electron. Experimental results failed to agree with Mott's theory, however, as reported in several subsequent papers, including this one by Rose and Bethe. "They tried various ways of solving the problem and concluded as follows: 'In addition to multiple scattering we have investigated the depolarization effect of other processes . . . The result of these considerations may be stated very briefly. Unfortunately, none of the effects considered produces any appreciable depolarization of the electrons and the discrepancy between theory and experiment remains-perhaps more glaring than before'" (A. Franklin, The Neglect of Experiment, p. 67). .
