Hacia el final de la guerra, Raus estaba considerado como uno de los principales tácticos del ejército alemán en guerra acorazada, lo que lo convirtió en una preciada captura para los servicios de inteligencia del Ejército de los Estados Unidos tras la guerra. Durante su cautiverio, Raus escribió para los norteamericanos estas detalladas memorias de su servicio en el Frente del Este. Traducidas del alemán original al inglés, compilidas y edutadas por el prominente historiador de la Segunda Guerra Mundial Steven H. Newton, estas memorias son una crónica de la lucha en el Este desde Barbarroja hasta la primavera de 1945. Con el Anschluss de 1938 ingresó en la Werhmacht con el grado de coronel. En julio de 1940 mandaba un regimiento motorizado y en septiembre de 1941, siendo ya general, asumió el mando de la 6º División Panzer. En mayo de 1943 ascendió a general de tropas panzer y recibió el mando del XI Cuerpo. En agosto recibió la Cruz de Caballero. Posteriormente asumiría el mando sucesivamente del XLVII Cuerpo Panzer, de los 4º y 1º Ejércitos Panzer y del Grupo de Ejércitos Raus. Fue enviado a la reserva en marzo de 1945. Murió en 1956.
