Several separate journals, which now can be found at the District of Columbia Archives, make up a series of minutes for the Orphan's Court of the City and the County of Washington, District of Columbia. From the introduction: "With the general absence of early marriage records in the form of court or parish register, genealogists are greatly handicapped in the pursuit to prove family relationships of persons associated with Alexandria, Virginia. As an example of this great loss, it is known a large number of Alexandria residents were married in Christ Episcopal Church. Unfortunately no eighteenth century parish register of marriages exists though the church was formed in 1773. This work primarily contains records of marriages for persons who were at some time associated with Alexandria, Virginia, and in most cases, early residents there. In the case of records extracted from probate records or deeds, e.g. of the Hustings Court, Circuit Court and Corporation Court, it generally is not possible ot determine either the date or place of marriage. Since the scope of this work is to include married couples who had a connection to Alexandria, it sometimes may be known a couple was not married in Alexandria. When this is known to be true, it is so noted. Most marriages referenced in this work occurred before 1820, and references generally do nt extend beyond 1840. ".
