One of the first fifty films in the National Film Registry, Cassavetes' film was financed with his own money, distributed in art houses and on college campuses, and made Richard Dreyfuss vomit after viewing it, calling it "the most incredible, disturbing, scary, brilliant, dark, sad, depressing movie ever made."
