Pereda pertenece a la escuela realista oriundo de España, que, fundada por el desconocido autor del Lazarillo de Tormes, fue continuada por Mateo Alemán, Cervantes, Quevedo, Castillo Solórzano y muchos otros. Con la… única excepción de Cervantes, sin embargo, los escritores picarescas faltan casi por completo en el espíritu de generosa simpatía y ternura que constituye una gran parte del encanto de Pereda. Su realismo es puramente española, tan alejados de la morosidad de Zola a partir de la sentimentalidad agraciada de Pierre Loti. Pocos escritores del siglo 19 poseían el temperamento viril de Pereda, y, con la única excepción de Leo Tolstoy, no mantienen un fin moral más constantemente a la vista. Esta tendencia didáctica hiere sin duda sus efectos. Por otra parte, su sombría sátira ocasiones degenera en caricatura poco truculento, y el uso excesivo de términos dialectales y técnicos (que le hizo la oferta Sotileza con un breve vocabulario) es un grave defecto artística. Pero vio, sabía, entendido carácter; él creó no sólo los tipos, sino personajes vivos, como Andrés, Cleto y Muergo en Sotileza, Pedro Juan y Pilará en La Puchera; y él personificó el tumulto y la calma del mar con más poder que Víctor Hugo está representada en Les travailleurs de la mer. Sus poderes eran descriptivos de primer orden, y su estilo, puro de todas las afectaciones y los adornos, es de singular fuerza y flexibilidad.
