Oversize Softcover. Condition: Very Good. John Everett Millais (illustrator). John Everett Millais (1829-1896) was one of the most celebrated figures of Victorian art. As a young man, he founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt. In later years, he rose to wealth, acclaim, and social prestige as a landscapist, illustrator, and painter of subject and genre paintings, and as the most successful British portrait painter of his generation. This illustrated book, published to accompany a major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London, is the first comprehensive survey of Millais's portraits. It is also a historically important record of High Victorian England, containing the artist's memorable images of such leading political and cultural figures as Gladstone, Disraeli, Tennyson, Ruskin, Carlyle, and Lillie Langtry. The book includes 136 color reproductions as well as essays by eminent scholars that place Millais's work in the context of his public and private life, making this an authoritative and visually compelling study of the artist's extraordinary contributions to portraiture. John Everett Millais (1829-1896) was one of the most celebrated figures of Victorian art as well as--with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Holman Hunt--founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. This book describes Millais' astonishing popularity and reproduces 175 of his portraits, 100 of them in color.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In present-day industrial societies very few people have a say in the built environment that surrounds their daily lives. Yet many people are unhappy with the buildings they see, use and have to live with, especially those buildings, mostly post war, that come under the heading 'modern architecture'. Though many people dislike these buildings, they often feel that there must be something good about them because they are modern and modern equals progress. Many people also feel that their dislike is perhaps due to ignorance, and that the designers must know something they don't. Why is modern architecture the way it is? Because the architects who have designed it are followers of the Modern Movement. This came into being in the 1920s when a very small group of youngish architects felt all that had gone before should be rejected and that architectural design should start afresh. This fresh start should be based on modern technology and a new modern approach to life. Unfortunately, while these architects may have been well-meaning, the basis of their new architecture was fundamentally flawed in all aspects. Under different circumstances this 'new' architecture might have been a small blip on the landscape of architectural history. But this small group managed, by the late 1950s, to take control of the architectural profession in developed countries world-wide. Having got into power they ruthlessly determined that all new buildings should follow their erroneous diktats. This book explains the background to the emergence of the Modern Movement, how it was based on completely false premises and how the architectural 'revolutionaries' gained and kept power. It examines the consequences, and wonders how things might have, and certainly should have, turned out differently. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

paperback. Condition: Very Good. Most of our very good books have only minor imperfections such as shelf wear consistent with a new book that's sat on a bookshop shelf for a year or two. Occasionally we may miss other minor imperfections as we have to grade books at speed. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.
