Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Roberts, Michael Symmons. The half healed. First edition, inscribed by the author 'To Rachael, with all best wishes, MSR' on title page. London: Jonathan Cape, 2008. Cape Poetry. Paperback, near fine. Slight remains of label on front cover. Binding strong and tight. Black endpapers. 56pp., contents clean and bright. Michael Symmons Roberts FRSL (born 1963 in Preston, Lancashire) is a British poet. He has published eight collections of poetry, all with Cape (Random House), and has won the Forward Prize, the Costa Book Award and the Whitbread Prize for Poetry, as well as major prizes from the Arts Council and Society of Authors. He has been shortlisted for the T. S. Eliot Prize, the Griffin Poetry Prize and the Ondaatje Prize. Michael Symmons Roberts's new collection, The Half-Healed, is haunted by violent conflict, but one that cannot speak its name, a war that is everywhere and nowhere at once. Horses graze on a plain, but behind them fires are blazing. Alphabets are unreadable, roadblocks stop traffic, and poem titles sound the alert by reaching for the Old Testament ("How Long, O Lord, Will You Leave Them?"). The book opens with "Fire Regs", in which Roberts captures the inertia of public speech in the face of mayhem: "In the event of a ram raid / on the atrium, a van stuffed / with explosives, please take sides." In "Hooded", he moves from savage, faceless combatants and klansmen to the iconography of Guantánamo Bay, adopting a risky "voiceover" commentary as he does so: "And now we hood our enemies / to blind them. Keep an eye on that irony." He continues to write absorbingly about animals and the shadow zone between the human and the divine, and possesses an eye deserving, for once, of the over-used epithet "painterly" (The Guardian).
