Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Loveliest Vowel Empties presents for the first time in English the collected poems of legendary Swiss Surrealist Meret Oppenheim, printed with facing-page originals in German and French. Oppenheim's poetry -- 49 poems written between 1933 and 1980 -- moves beyond Surrealism to inhabit a voice all her own, with imagery and sound that, as the Herald Tribune wrote, 'express witty and poetic responses to the surprises of life.' A key figure of the Paris art scene in the 1930s, Oppenheim moved in a circle that included Andre Breton, Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, and Elsa Schiaparelli. Writing for the Village Voice about her work, Gary Indiana noted that 'the singularity of Meret Oppenheim's work is such that nothing seems dated . the range of the work and its quirky self-assurance are striking.' The publication of her collected poems coincides with a major retrospective exhibition of her artwork at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Minor edge and corner wear; no dj; lightly scuffed and scratched; corners are lightly bumped and rubbed; some light shelf wear; ex-library with the usual library markings; overall a nice used copy! Full-color pictorial boards with black lettering. 175 historical and artistic pages nicely enhanced by black and white and full-color photographs and illustrations! "In 1936 when Meret Oppenheim made the "fur teacup" she created an icon of twentieth-century art. Moreover, the fame of this object as well as the notoriety of Man Ray's photographs of her from the 1930s and those shortly before her death by other photographers such as Basel-based Christian Vogt caused her to become an icon herself. Indeed, Oppenheim's face and body became field for works of art in themselves as evidenced by her self-portrait of 1980, Portrait (Photo) with Tattoo." ---- from the Foreword.
