Leather. Condition: Good Only. None (illustrator). First edition. A scarce, first edition of Jean Garnier's editorial of Marii Mercatoris' works. In Latin. Mercator was a Latin Christian ecclesiastical writer. He was a strong advocate of Augustinian theology during the Pelagian controversy and wrote several anti-Pelagian treatises. He also had several translations published, being the works of several orthodox Greek theologians and heretical authors. This work is an editorial of Mercator's complete works. It is presented in two parts, bound in one volume. The first part comprises of Mercator's anti-Pelagian treatises with extensive commentary through the form of seven dissertations by Garnier. Garnier's dissertations hold great esteem and Cardinal Noris was an individual who hailed them in particular. To the second part Garnier's dissertations give an outline of the history of the Pelagian controversy, on heretical authors and of Nestorianism from 428-433. With the errata to the final leaf of both volumes. With the bookplate of Sidney Edward Bouverie Bouverie-Pusey to the front pastedown. Bouverie-Pusey was an author of a work regarding the history of Ireland and 'Permanence and Evolution - An Inquiry into the Supposed Mutability of Animal Types'. A fascinating history of ecclesiastical controversy and various standpoints during the fourth and fifth centuries. Edited with knowledgeable dissertations by Jean Garnier, a French Jesuit church historian, patristic scholar and moral theologian. In a full calf binding. Work has been rebacked. Externally, front board is detached but present. Title page is still bound to the front board. Patches of rubbing to the extremities, resulting in some loss. Rear joint is cracked with the hinge tender. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly cockled. Slight age toning to the page edges. Occasional light spots. Good Only. book.

This book is a collection of documents related to the Pelagian heresy, which was condemned by the early Church as being incompatible with the teachings of Christ. The Pelagian heresy denied the existence of original sin, and thus the need for the grace of God to achieve salvation. The book includes the writings of Marius Mercator, a fifth-century Christian writer who was a staunch opponent of the Pelagian heresy. Mercator's writings provide a valuable insight into the nature of the Pelagian heresy and the arguments used to refute it. The book also includes the writings of other early Church fathers who condemned the Pelagian heresy, such as Augustine of Hippo and Pope Zosimus. These writings provide a comprehensive overview of the Pelagian heresy and its condemnation by the early Church. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
